Thread: Doors Box set DVD-A 5.1

  1. Re: Doors Box set DVD-A 5.1

Just rec'd the final product. It is absolutely scrumptious! Without question, the release of the year.

We've all seen this picture of the set. Here are a couple of shots I was able to take during lunch:

    The Outside

The Inside (you can see Jim in the peephole, you scroll that little white wheel on the side to view more band pics thru the hole)

Over on the Hoffmann site they are all wining about the wrong vocal mixes being included and the 'high' appearing in break on through !!!!

So what its a brand new surround remix not the original disc its not pretenting to be the original !!!!
I sometimes think they are missing the point in a 5.1 surround remix !!!!

    Blood boiling

    Rant off and relax

    NO, not THEM!

Life is too short to worry about shit like that. If you don't care to buy them, STFU and move on. Me, I'm jumping for joy!

In one week this month, we're going to get this great box, the David Crosby DVD-A, and a DVD-A from THE BEATLES!!!!

Amazing output for a "dead" format!

In all fairness, I think the complaining has to do with the "high" part being on the "classic mix" on the cd. I don't think anyone is complaining about it being on the DVD-A.

I'm waiting for the delivery man to arrive as well.
The Doors set, according to their website, will ship on the 17th, so I will have to give it a few days to get here from the USA.
Beatles will be coming from Jersey, as will David Crosby.
Amazing output for a "dead" format!
There is still more where that came from too.
Don't forget Bass Communion's "loss", and quite possibly "Ghosts in the Machine" early next year too, along with another 2 PT albums.

Wait a second.....if it has the "high" part in it, then it isn't the classic mix. Do you mean to tell me they've put 2 stereo remixes on this and left out the original mix? Just great....can they get anything right these days. Sure, it's a minor quibble being that it's a full box set with all albums in high resolution surround....but still, I think this is a problem that they left out the original mix, when it was implied that it would be included.

That is correct. The "classic mix" has the 'HIGH" part on it.

  10. Re: Doors Box set DVD-A 5.1

Reading all your explanations I still don’t get it. Sorry, English is not my native language.
I like to know, what is on the DVD-Audio disc?

Are there only surround mixes on the DVD-A or even a stereo mix in hi-resolution?

I read somewhere that they did a "40th Anniversary Stereo Mix", with new parts and a classic stereo mix, are they both on the DVD-Audio? In 96kHz, 24-bit stereo??

And from this thread I read that the new classic stereo mix is not the one used on the original LPs? Is that right?

Totally confused, I hope you can get it right for me.

  11. Re: Doors Box set DVD-A 5.1

There is no hi-rez original stereo mix on the DVD-A. There is only a new stereo hi-rez mix on the DVD-A. That being said, If you like the Doors this set is great IMHO. See the poll for further comments.

  12. Re: Doors Box set DVD-A 5.1

From what I've gathered, the mixes on the CD are the orig "classic" stereo mixes. In the case of "Break On Through," the "high" bit was flown in, seamlessly. The label originally had that word ducked in the original mix, against the band's wishes. This is the definitive "classic" mix, according to the band, which will nonetheless be controversial to some fans.

The DVD-A includes hi-res surround and stereo ("40th Anniversary Re-Mix") for DVD-Audio players; DVD-Video players get DTS and Dolby Digital surround, and Dolby Stereo.

  13. Re: Doors Box set DVD-A 5.1

On the old DVD-Audio version of L.A. Woman the hi-res stereo mix was the "classic mix". Has this been changed on the new DVD-Audio version of L.A. Woman? In other words is the stereo mix on the new DVD-A version a 40th anniversary remix?

Yes, so hang on to that LA Woman as it might be the only classic hi rez mix.

The price dropped to $89.99 delivered by the time I clicked on add to cart, saved a $1. It will take a couple of weeks to receive but there really are a lot of surround releases out right now, times are better all of a sudden.

I haven't seen a post on it, but have you seen the Sound and Vision review of Perception? He was very unimpressed by the surround mix. I think only one of the surround discs got as high as 3 stars out of 5.

I'm glad the QQ folks think much more highly of it!

    Yeah, I read the review in S & V. I hope my opinion of the set is higher than Parke Puterbaugh's. His surround ratings were;

    The Doors - 1.5
    Strange Days - 2.5
Waiting For The Sun - 3.5
    The Soft Parade - 3
    Morrison Hotel -3.5
    L. A. Woman - 3

I will reserve judgement for myself when it arrives!

Re: Doors Box set DVD-A 5.1

I don't know if any of you read Paste Magazine or not, but they gave this set 3 1/2 stars out of 5, which isn't bad. The reviewers big complaint was whether another Doors box set was needed at all. He goes on and on about how the buying public is being taken once again. Here's the rub, the full page review briefly mentions multichannel, (and incorrectly by the way) as "An additional CD with 5.1 Surround Sound" (What?). No mention of high resolution or DVD-Audio at all. From reading the article, my take is that he didn't even listen to the surround tracks in any form. Why do some publications purposely omit specific information about what makes this, or any other release special from past reissued recordings? This type of thing irks me. I do not presently own much Doors except for their greatest hits on CD and L. A. Woman on DVD-A. I would probably not be getting this set either had it not been released in hi res MC. Not that I wouldn't like to check out the Doors entire cataloge, but I welcome this release mainly for the improved sonics and mutichannel difference. They need to promote the 5.1 options much more as a selling point! If a magazine is going to do a reveiw their readers need to know what they're getting, or missing.

Re: Doors Box set DVD-A 5.1

There certainly have been a ton of Doors re-releases and I have avoided all of them, until now. Although it is getting mixed reviews I read enough about it from Felix and others, that I finally decided I had to bite. I don't care about the original stereo mix, I won't listen anyway but I do understand that others are frustrated by that. This one is definitive for me, but the group isn't even in my top 50, much less top 10 rock acts. Bring on Led Zeppelin and more Beatles in surround.

Can anyone help me out by testing their system? I only have a 4-channel system without a center channel. When I disable the center channel on my Toshibsa SD-9200 DVD-A player, Morrison's voice doesn't come through (since it is mostly only present on the center and Perception may be authored to prevent center channel downmixing). So....I am 99% sure my isssue is caused by the "authoring" and not my player. Can someone test this by turning off their center channel on the menu screen and see if you can still hear Morrison's voice on ANY of the Perception discs? THANKS!

If his voice is mixed in the center channel, then you won't hear it out of any other speaker.
