I think this is a pretty good deal....a brand-new Yamaha universal player, directly from Yamaha for about $90.00 shipped....

Yamaha DV-SL5860 universal player, directly from Yamaha

However, here's potentially a better deal than even that Yamaha universal player.....actually, it's another Yamaha universal player!

Yamaha DVD-S1700 universal player at Newegg.com for $110.00 shipped

It's certainly a classier-looking player, with an aluminum front face plate and those big support feet. It also has more powerful video processing and a detachable power cord. And according to this post at audioasylum.com, the S1700 sounds excellent as well.

However, don't give up on the SL5860 yet....because according to a buyer of the SL5860 that followed my link over at stevehoffman.tv, it also recognizes HDCDs. Don't forget that the SL5860 also does CD upsampling, which the S1700 doesn't do.

Not to thread cap, but here is another good SACD/DVDA player deal. The Denon 758 (1940) for $70 new at your local Costco. I bought one for a back up.

Note: Not all Costco's seems to have these in stock on the floor.

The Denon 1940 has HDMI 1.1, so it will do DVD-Audio over HDMI, but not SACD.

Are you sure about the Yamaha DVD-S1700? I think it's also HDMI 1.1.

I'm actually debating about returning the 1940 and waiting for the 2930ci clearance prices.

Just checked the User's Manual for the S1700 and it explicitly says no SACD output over HDMI.

notice that the universal player is becoming more avail. so much for 2 dead formats.

This is a discontinued model and is being liquidated at an obvious clearance price. I don't believe any company is making SACD/DVD-A players that don't include Blu-ray now and I believe only two are making those, Oppo and D&M and a few companies are or will be selling clones or modified versions of models developed by those two companies. This sale certainly isn't a sign there is any life left in SACD and DVD-A, I would think just the opposite. The market that already has a player is likely the intended market for this item, as a back up or replacement.

It is quite a deal at $36 delivered.

Hmm. I returned a Denon 1940/758 I got for a good price a few months ago to save up for the Oppo 83. Not sure how this compares, but even at this price it's pretty tempting to just buy-n-store.

I believe the Denon DVD-1940CI is a better player, particularly for DVD-V. This Yamaha doesn't have HDMI and was a less expensive player.

I wonder who OEM'ed the Yamaha DV-SL5860?

I couldn't figure that out. There is no discussion of the player anywhere I could find. There were only a few OEM's of these budget universal players anywhere near the time frame this one came out. The ones I can think of quickly:

Pioneer
Samsung
Winbase Electronics (Oppo)
Funai

Funai made Denon's budget players so my guess is Pioneer made this Yamaha player. I also believe Pioneer made most or all of the budget Onkyo universal players. I don't believe Winbase ever made one without HDMI so I will rule that out as possible and Samsung didn't make one without DVI/HDMI to the best of my knowledge.
