Greetings from a brand-new board member! I'm a long time audio nut, but thanks to the local swap meet and a kind friend, I've now entered the world of quad. Before posting I took the time to search the board and found a LOT of info, but I still have a few questions.
First off, my equipment:
Two receivers: Sansui QR-1500, Sherwood Dynaquad S-7225.
Speakers are a nice pair of Fisher 3-Ways in front, and a pair of China-made cheapo junkers with one 5" mid in the back.
I also have a Zenith Quad 8 track player that a friend lent me with his collection of tapes.
So, some comments and questions:
1. I understand that the Sansui QR-1500 is not really a good quad decoder, as it is a very early model. It doesn't specifically list what format of quad it decodes, but I think I read it's a QS decoder. I have a bunch of SQ disks. Are these two formats compatible at all? I'm pretty sure I hear some quad effects when I listen to these records through this decoder, but it's hard to tell. The front and cheapo back speakers have such drastically different frequency responses, sometimes I wonder if the separation I'm hearing is just caused by this.... almost like playing a "reprocessed stereo" record.
2. The Sherwood Dynaquad. First off, I have to say I had never heard of Dynaquad when I first found this receiver. I happen to be a huge fan of the Beach Boys, and I just about had to change my shorts when I realized this thing was that oddball quad receiver meant to play their early 1970s albums. It sounds really good. Not a ton of separation, but lots of neat ambiance!
3. Being that I have two amps with early cruddy decoders, is there a quad adapter box that you guys might recommend? The Sansui amp does have 4CH inputs in the back, with each input going to a separate speaker. Does an adapter box typically feed into a 4CH input in an amp, or does it just take a 2CH input and the four speakers plug into it?
Whew... I think that's all my questions. Thanks!! -Shane
