This is what I get for allowing Apple to automatically update software on Apple TV.

I just discovered what I guess is a new “feature” for Apple Music on Apple TV. (Maybe it’s on their iPad/iPhone app, too.)

I was listening to a classical album this morning and then noticed it was eventually playing music from other albums. When I investigated, I found that after an album plays, Apple has added “More Music Like This” to the end of the album so it keeps playing music.

Personally, I don’t want that. If I choose to stream an album, I just want that album. I don’t want a jarring experience going from one album to a bunch of songs by other artists that Apple feels are “like this.” Sometimes the mood of a single album is enough and an important part of the listening experience. When the album is done, it’s OK to simply be done.

So I wrote a note through their feedback channel. No foul language, but lots of exclamation marks. A healthy dose of question marks, too.

Right after that, I found out they did the same thing to curated playlists that I created in Apple Music. So they’ve taken my playlists where I chose exactly what I wanted, and added stuff I don’t want. And my short playlist for Atmos speaker testing? Yeah, they’ve got more suggestions for that, too.

It’s one thing to add to the end of album which is bad enough in my mind, but stay the eff out of my playlists.

So I wrote another note through their feedback channel. Still no foul language, but even more exclamation marks. More question marks, too.

I don’t know why they wouldn’t offer a clearly marked toggle to turn the “feature” off. Checked in Settings for the Music app and couldn’t find anything.

OK... deep breath. 🧘‍♂️🧘‍♂️

I mention it in case this would be an annoyance for you, too, and you update manually. Maybe it’s just an annoyance for me. I know it will be an annoyance for my wife who won’t care in the least but will have to fake being interested when she asks how my day was and I start ranting calmly discussing this.

(I just had this odd thought of me listening to a full album on my new turntable, finishing side B, and someone from Apple rushing over to start throwing random 45s on the turntable to make sure I keep listening.)

Just did a test on my Apple Music (tvOS 18.0) by playing the last 2 tracks on the new Tears for Fears and after the last track it went to the first track and parked. Whew!
Mine is 18.1.

I tried looking up what changes they included, but “More Music Like This" wasn’t mentioned. I’m still hoping maybe there’s something I missed or it’s just some oddity. But for the moment, it’s frustrating.

I mean Tidal does this as well, but it's pretty easy to turn off. Didn't think this was a new feature, it's been doing that for years. I'd be pretty surprised if it can't be turned off in the settings.
