In the early 1970s Barclay James Harvest pioneered the fusion of rock and classical music, touring with their own orchestra own symphony orchestra. On the 23rd September 2023, a stunning and unique concert took place which saw the first performance by any incarnation of Barclay James Harvest with a symphony orchestra to take place in UK since 1973. Joining JLBJH for this memorable concert was The Slaithwaite Philharmonic Orchestra, arranged and conducted by Benjamin Ellin.

The performance featured classic BJH songs such as ‘The Poet’, ‘After the Day’, 'Mocking Bird’, ‘She Said’, ‘Galadriel’, ‘Poor Man’s Moody Blues’ and ‘Hymn’, and newer pieces such as ‘On Leave’, along with two pieces not performed live since 1973, Woolly Wolstenholme’s evocative ‘Moonwater’ (sung by guest vocalist Eleanor Sandars) and the epic and majestic ‘Dark Now My Sky’.

‘PHILHARMONIC! THE ORCHESTRAL CONCERT’ has been mixed in both stereo and 5.1 Surround Sound by Stephen W Tayler and captures the entire concert on 2CDs, a region free High-Definition Blu Ray video with 5.1 Surround Sound and an NTSC / Region Free DVD of this stunning concert film of one of the most memorable concerts staged by any incarnation of Barclay James Harvest.

I saw John Lees' BJH a few years ago at the Giants Of Rock Weekend in Minehead, they were excellent (I can't remember if I have or have not seen the original BJH, I saw so many bands years ago, but I think I did!).
So this is a definite buy, I might wait until 1st May so I don't scare myself on how much I've spent this month when I look at my purchases spreadsheet (August 2023 was the scariest)!

Some bands that had accompanied Orchestras performed in quadraphonic.
Such as Procol Harum , and The Moody Blues.

@Stephen W Tayler ;
Stephen , did BJH have any quad concerts in their archive ?
Or is it a wait and see situation?
I don't have access to the entire archive, I am just presented with the appropriate files and content per project - even I have to wait and see!!

I watched the whole show last night.
Spellbound I was.
I've always enjoyed rock combined with a full orchestra .
John Lees ain't getting any younger, 75 I believe, but he's still got it.

Everything about this show is fantastic.
The music...oh the fabulous music.
The mix is wonderful.

In fact if you like Barclay James Harvest music then this is a fitting epitaph to see John and the boys performing at their very best.
John has announced he is no longer touring but will still do the odd show here and there.

The orchestra is beautiful, brilliant and just darn good.

Stephen has aced another great mix.

Fully recommend this release folks

There is a BJH quad concert. It's great. You said "performed in quad". As far as I can tell (and I am no authority on this) this is not performed in quad but was broadcast (or encoded?) in the old radio style quad. Formulaic in the placement of instruments in the sound field but great quality and a fun listen.

POP SPECTACULAR #77, featuring Barclay James Harvest In Concert (BBC TS CN 2129SQ)
Summer Soldier; Medicine Man; Crazy City
After The Day; Negative Earth; She Said; Paper Wings
[recorded 19-06-74 at the Golders Green Hippodrome, London, in SQ quadraphonic]

Though it's pricey, I bought this based on the above reviews (there is no poll to go by). I've only listened to the first 30 mins so far and I am a little disappointed. With such a large orchestra, I had expected it to be more encompassing. :( Maybe I can try to raise my surround speakers, but I don't usually like to do that kind of thing.

It's also strange that there is no reference as to where and when the concert took place that I can find. An oversight? Perhaps they will mention it in the video credits at the end, when I reach that spot.

(Additional: I would like to add though, no matter my disappointment here, SWT still remains one of my all-time fave surround engineers.)
