I use matrix decoders to derive surround sound (I mostly listen to popular music, I rarely buy live albums/concert videos), I was wondering if devices similar to the Yamaha device in the link that create a concert hall effect by using multiple delays of the L & R stereo inputs create a pleasant surround sound effect from studio produced stereo content?

Oh, yes. You'll never go back to empty sides.

I use a Lexicon MC8 (ambiance currently not in use for significant-other limitations). For keeping the main channels analog with analog sources, you need two Lexicons and a couple of additional things.

The Lexicon can do side and rear ambiance channels. The Lexicons are made for side speakers, not for rear speakers as the Yamaha. I don't think there would be much of a difference.
