Columbia/Legacy has released a new Single Layer Multichannel SACD of the world music classic "Drums of Passion" by Babatunde Olatunji.

It's now in stock at Acoustic Sounds, Music Direct and Red Trumpet.

Check the High Fidelity Review story at www.highfidelityreview.co...r=17255096 for more details.

Recorded in 1959 and released in 1960, it's probably from three-track (or four at most) and like the other SACDs from these types of masters (Miles Davis Kind of Blue, Dave Brubeck Time Out, Billie Holiday Lady in Satin) that Sony released in the early days of their foray into SACD of the late '90s and early '00s, the surround content is minimal at best.

You have to appreciate their intention of trying to have a wide range of music available, but they'd have been better served by mining multitracks from a few years later, either in addition to or instead of these, because there's so much more you can do with good four and eight-track recordings - look at the recent D-V release of the Henry Mancini Greatest Hits comps for example, which offer a great surround experience despite all being recorded in 1964 or earlier.

Drums of Passion
is obviously notable for producing the track Jin-go-lo-ba, which was covered several times (probably most well-known here by Santana) but still kind of a head-scratcher given how few surround SACD remixes Sony commissioned back in the day that this was one of them.

I love the album. I have the cd with bonus tracks and a vinyl reissue but was curious about the multichannel sacd.
