Hayes first album of non-soundtrack material since 1971's Black Moses (and his last until he recorded Chocolate Chip for his own Hot Buttered Soul imprint under ABC following Stax's bankruptcy), Joy was released in quad in October 1973 alongside its stereo counterpart.
The quad LP version of this release was housed in the stereo sleeve with a teal-coloured 'SQ' sticker with the new catalog number applied to the front and spine of the jacket. The quad 8-track release came in a standard Stax cardboard slipcase.
