...though somebody said "The Sony UBP-x800m2 can play Atmos from a USB drive as long as it is stored in a . m2ts container and the TrueHD track includes an AC3 core. IMPORTANT: the AC3 core must be on the same track (thd+ac3)", and someone else "Try .m2ts file instead of .mkv. Tested on my X800M2 and my AVR is showing atmos. Sony players seem like Panasonic in this regard."
so i hoped in a workaround...
You could extract one of the .m2ts files and give it a shot.

If you use makeMKV to do a folder backup, you can just copy out one of the .m2ts files

Open makeMKV, then select the disc in the optical drive if it doesn't automatically see it.
On the top menu there is an icon for "folder backup" you can hold the mouse over the icons until you see the one for folder backup (I think that's what it's called, or just backup). Then it will extract both the BDMV and CERTIFICATE folders, decrypted. The .m2ts files will be in the BDMV/STREAM folder.

Well refer to your earlier post where someone said they would work on your player.
I assume put them on the USB drive and see if they will play. I have no experience with your player, I have Oppo's.

My first attempt was an MKV file from the folder I made with makeMKV ripping my disc (the situation where the receiver would not see Atmos); now I understand I have to make a different MKV file moving M2TS files away(?) and that is the part confusing me 😞

I honestly have no idea. I was under the impression that your player would play .m2ts files from usb. Have you tried that?
If the stream has both the lossless stream and the lossy DD+ stream then maybe it will play as - is without creating another mkv file.
You are sort of on your own here....I don't rip past .iso and I play .iso files directly off my pc.

Refer back to that thread you posted earlier and see what others have to say about your player and playing .m2ts files.

Let us know how it goes.

Here is my current recipe for ripping and playing Atmos files.
  • From my Macbok Air I use Makemvk to rip the blu-ray to create a single MKV file. Make sure to select the proper Atmos audio format
  • Use the beta mkvtoolsnix for Mac to extract the individual audio tracks as mkv files
  • Manually rename the files to the appropriate track name. I do not think there is a Mac tool that will tag MKV files…at least I have not found one
  • Playback files on the $50 Neumi Atom 4K Ultra HD streaming device I bought on Amazon. The files are on a USB flash drive
  • I am playing back on a 5.4.1 Atmos system based on Anthem AVM70
