I received my copy from CD Japan yesterday. I was less than excited about this deluxe release since we already had the unreleased quad mix on SACD several years ago, but being such a fan I pulled the trigger for the packaging if nothing else. I know this album inside and out, and folks...the quality of this SACD version is UNBELIEVABLE!!!! It makes the earlier release sound like it was 3 or 4 tape generations back. The overall fidelity, dynamic range, noise level, just everything about it is miles ahead of what we have. I couldn't believe what I was hearing so had to pull and compare the older SACD to be sure I wasn't just imagining some difference. If you like this album, you need this new release!!!! Happy Thanksgiving!

I have the Audio Fidelity SACD. Now you have persuaded me to order the new one from CDJapan!

Glad you ordered it and look forward to seeing your thoughts after receiving it. I know you will be pleased! As glad as I was to have all those Audio Fidelity titles years ago, makes me now sort of hope some of those get revisited and improved upon as well!

Currently listening to this on Apple Music. Anyone have a theory on the mixing history of this release? The album was 1968, so I’m guessing was not a quad back in the day?

CBS was experimenting with quad mixing as early as 1968, seemingly with John Cale (yes, the Velvet Underground John Cale) supervising and Jim Reeves doing the mixing. It seems that Larry Keyes and Don Young joined in, and then took over the mixing with Al Lawrence supervising in the next couple of years. I've written about this a bit in a couple of places:

There may be more info as well, like the link that @J. PUPSTER posted.

I ordered Eli from CD Japan as well. For a lark, I decided to listen to the album on Apple Music through my Apple TV > Sonos Arc surround setup. Was completely surprised to hear it in surround! So, if this is an indicator of what the SACD sounds like, a good purchase! :)
