One of the stereo formats I love is the 4 track cartridge. Not 4 channel quad. 4 track stereo cartridge. Like a quad 8 track, there are just two programs of material, but twice as much surface for recording the signal since it is stereo vs quadraphonic. No rubber roller in the cart like in the quad 8 or stereo 8. Just a big hole in the cart shell and the rubber roller is built into the player itself. I just got a Muntz home player back that I had rebuilt and am having a 4 track marathon weekend. :banana:
Listening to Deep Purple - Shades of Deep Purple at the moment. For analog cartridges, some of these 4 tracks sound pretty darn good. I especially like the green Columbia carts and the yellow Ampex carts. Seem to have better fidelity than some of the cheap crap Muntz pumped out. If you don't know the story of Earl "Madman" Muntz there are a lot of articles on the internet that share tales of his adventures. He basically invented the idea of music cartridges for the car. Then Bill Lear ripped off the idea and created the 8-track which ultimately dominated the market. Here is a link to an article on Muntz if you are interested;

I thought this copy of Fresh Cream was interesting. Still contains the price tag from December 26, 1969. Someone must have spent their Christmas money on some tunes. $5.98 in 1969! $39.38 in today's dollars! Sold at Muntz Cartridge City.

Muntz originally had the monopoly on the market. He produced and manufactured tapes and had the stores where they could be purchased and Muntz brand equipment to play them on.

If any of you are 4 track cartridge collectors and have any extras in your collection I have some spares I'd be interested in swapping. Send me a PM!

For all you 4 track lovers, there is an old thread that discusses many of these old technologies: https://www.quadraphonicquad.com/fo...ape-Minipak/page2&highlight=4+track+cartridge

Posts # 29. 36 & 39 have photos of 4 track. Post #36 has both a caricature and a photo of the Madman himself. I also posted a photo of Gidget, which would adapt 4 track cartridges to play on 8 track decks.

Radio Doctors in Milwaukee had some prerecorded 4 track cartridges for sale until the early '80's!
