Just set up a QRX-7001 with 4 good speakers and acquired the 'RM' Japanese press of DSOTM... went to play it and it occurred to me that my used $100 Audio Technica needle might not be such a good idea.

Don't want to spend $2000+ on a needle (I do but!) and I don't need to chase after the elusive top 2% of nearly impossible to hear quality.... something that won't ruin the record for starters is good. I like rock alternative big band swing rhythm blues. Not looking for CD-4 needles right now. looking for micro groove needle - not a VR needle obviously.

turntable is a 1956 D&R idler with dual GE Baton tone arms (A500 and A501) ... soon to have double slate plinth in a couple months

What model AT are you using? And at what tracking force in that old beast?

Happy trails,
Larry B.

dont recall which one, I have 3 of them and all were used for DJ work 20 years and cost $75 back then, and all of them have suffered the 'I fell asleep and woke to the rumble of the needle tracking the grooves under the label for the last 2 hours'.... Little exagerated

The arm is adjustable, currently using the 16” transcription..

Next question which I stumble on..... Mm or MC, .... The needles were used in basic technics belt drives.. 4 little prongs that take 4 little receptacles that are a major pain to solder to 33 g wire

I def want/need a new cart/needle. The tonearm does not take a screw in type shell, nor a simple plug in, prob have to google and image of a ge baton a500 or a501 to see what I am dealing with ..... And I run direct to Qrx.... No phono preamp, but maybe the Qrx has a preamp?, needles and preamps mm/mc.... This is my weak area. I am not against going phono preamp.... Just dont want to spend $2000, however, I dont want to play that record if I actually should be using a $2k setup.... I.e.... All the questions
