I have a Realistic Quadraphonic system that was my fathers. It has the tuner, 8 Track tape, Cassette, reel to reel tape, and 4 speakers. Can anyone tell me if this is worth anything? If so, what is the best way to sell it?

Thanks!

Do you have any model numbers and/or pics? Some of Radio Shack's stuff was pretty good, while some of their other stuff was barely above stuff sold by Electrophonic.

I have both!

On the receiver is the following:

Realistic
CD-4SQ Four Channel Stereomax Receiver
Then over on the left it says: QTA-770

Here's pictures of everything:

So what did he do with all the tapes, or did he never buy any?

I still have the tapes. I have 8 track and reel to reel

Thank you for sharing with us. Nice system. Some of the Quad 8 track tapes FYI are worth money as well as reel tapes depending. If you do sell the whole system, shipping it all or in sections would be the issue so you could try craigslist or eBay with "local pickup only." There might be a local QQ member here who might buy if the price is right. They might also already be in your area.

If you didn't wish to sell, would make a nice home theater / music system as well by adding a combo DVD-A / SACD player off of eBay for about $50 bucks with Multi-Channel RCA outputs into the unit's 4 channel inputs. You would set the DVD player to "Phantom Center," with no sub speaker needed as the speakers already are full range.

That's some pretty nice gear. I understand that Pioneer built some of their better stuff, and the QTA-770 was their top-of-the-line receiver in 1975. All, in all, if it still works it should sound pretty good. I can't see what turntable you have, but if it's the BSR changer they sold, it's the weak link in the system.

my two cents-

stay away from eBay for selling the hardware as TOTL equipment is what sells, people tend to ignore everything else

I think you should sell the hardware as a set on kijiji/craiglist/newspaper- have a listing saying complete working vintage quadraphonic set up (4 matching speakers)- will get people excited, dont forget about the newspaper ad- saying you will showcase on a Saturday or something

who knows maybe you will find a hardcore realistic fan who loves only realistic equipment

as for the tapes/records- be more careful selling them, as they can be worth some $$- how many do you think you have?

How much should I ask for all of it?

Here's what I have in Quad reel to reel tapes:

Arthur Fiedler Boston Pops. Greatest hits of the 70's

Realistic demo tape, which has Flight of the humming bird, train moving from one side to the other.

Hugo in Wonderland - Hugo Mentenegro

Captain Blood - Classic film scores of Errol Flynn

George Rochberg - String Quartet No. 3 The concord string quartet

Plus a couple of home made tapes. I could list the songs, but I doubt they would be worth much, would they?

Those were in one box. I think I have another box some place else, I will have to look.

I also found his quadraphonic head phones. Are they worth anything?

He had a bunch of records, but I don't think they were quadronphonic. I think the turn table was only stereo. Either that, or the cassette tape player was stereo.

I also have a bunch of 8 track tapes.

lol where are you located? I want to pay a visit

list that you have quad 8 tracks on kijiji- you will get a lot of interest.....hopefully you will make a list for us, before then :)

and yes the quad headphones are worth something- did you find a remote anywhere lol?

Can anyone tell me what I should ask for the system? I want to post it on Craigslist, but I have no idea what price I should start at. Thanks!

You'd be lucky to get $200 for the entire lot. Excluding any Q8 tapes, since you haven't listed them.

did you ever sell the system? if you have all that matching realistic equipment your dad sounds like he was a die hard quad fan.....you must have some nice Q8's

btw your dad has nice taste- I like the clocks in the background...he must have some cool antiques

I've been wanting to find that Hugo Montenegro reel. Still have it?

It's hard to discern from the photo. I believe that the turntable is a Elac-Benjamin/Miracord which was OEM'ed in West Germany for Radio Shack. It is rim-drive, so it runs with a capstan/rubber wheel against the inside of the platter. Belt-drive and direct drive systems both have more constant speed. Belt drive is also better isolated than rim or direct, so there is less transfer of motor vibration to the LP/phono cartridge. As I recall, these turntables were equipped with a Realistic/Shure OEM cartridge, which was not suitable for CD-4.

A photo of the Realistic Miracord 40C, which I believe it to be: http://www.vinylengine.com/library/realistic/miracord-40c.shtml

No, not the stereo, sorry. I'm already set up for quad. But "I've been wanting to find that Hugo Montenegro reel . Still have it?" Just the Q4 of Hugo in Wonderland.
