This thread is in response to a person's question on QQ .

Namely..."So was that the last quad title issued ?" in relation to an early 80's ,83 I think, video SQ encoded concert title.

Anyways focusing on the final quad releases of the early 80's , I thought I'd try and supply some of that pertinent title release information.
Bear with me as I list what I know of those last quad titles which ended in the 80's and the final release (that I know of) in 1985.

Anyone with additional info/corrections are welcome to add to this thread please.

Starting with 80,81 we had 2 (maybe 3) titles from the label Mirror Image Pressings with....BrandX -Squared (Spacex encoded...SQ) and Paige Brook - (the title escapes me though ) .Also a 45 was planned but I'm not sure if it was released. These were SQ encoded vinyl albums btw.

Also very early in that time was Sonic Arts Record label : and here goes
Warren Lubich -Organasm LS 15. SQ LP
Warren Lubich - Wheels And Pipes LS 28 SQLP (ambient)
Warren Lubich - Wheels And Pipes LS 28Q SQLP
San Francisco Swing Express -Birth Of A Band LS 30 SQLP (ambient)
San Francisco Swing Express -Birth Of A Band LS 29 SQ LP
Walt Tolleson - Big Band LS 31 SQ LP

All from the USA and released between 80 and 83 ? (or thereabouts)

On RCA VIDEO....Dolly Parton - In London SQ encoded BETA , VHS ..83

On Pioneer Video...Kenny Loggins -Alive. SQ encoded video disc and tape 82
(also mentioned encoded SQ by Pioneer.....Queen - Greatest Flix 1982 or 83 video disc and tape)

Music Media M441 Beta, VHS and on Pioneer videodisc
DAVID BOWIE -Serious Moonlight (83) SQ encoded

Sony Video Dig-It records SQ encoded titles 1983--
Lionel Hampton - Live (24 mins) beta, vhs ,8mm.
Bill Watrous - Live (24 mins) beta, vhs ,8mm.
Rob McConnel-Live (25 mins) beta, vhs,8 mm.
and
The Sony CD Sampler Volume One : Jazz.( SQ CD ) DIDZ 10073
(contains selections from the Dig-It label as above plus other jazz artists)

Soundtrack albums :
Star Trek III -Search For Spock SQ 83 Capitol Records
2010 Odyssey Two 83 or 84 (label unknown) SQ encoded

and what I believe is the Last Quad Title,

Buddy Rich -The Channel One Set and West Side Story Set (1985)
SQ ENCODED on Sony Beta, VHS and Pioneer L D
and also on CD (SQ) on MOFI Sound Labs

All of the above were made primarily in the USA.

Also of note continued SQ quad titles were being released on vinyl and some cd from three Classical labels

Angel, EMI ...
Eurodisc (Germany)
and
Supraphon (Czech)

Angel stopped releasing early on as did Eurodisc, but Supraphon may have continued to the mid 80's (as far as I know)

Also 2 slated titles from Sonic Arts in SQ vinyl (and perhaps cd)--prior to 85 were
Henry Brant - Litany Of Tides, San Jose Symphony
Paul Hindesmiths-Mathis de Maler, San Jose Symphony

It's also worth noting that Equipment for Quad was being made for use ALL SQ QUAD DECODERS.
Audionics
Fosgate--101A 1982 and Gavotte 1984
Aphex in 1984,85 with the Model 6000 and 5000 and finally in 1986 the AVM 8000.

Mr. Smithers, I've NOT heard Star Trek III but I do have this Jerry Goldsmith Star Trek Nemesis soundtrack on mch SACD [mostly ambience in rear] https://www.hraudio.net/showmusic.php?title=698

STILL available from AmazonUK for NOT a lot of $$$$: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B000088E5Z/?tag=hraudio-21

Cool!

What about...

Star Trek X - The Search For Ralph?

I may just look into that after your excellent Circus Maximum tip!

Completely amazed they were releasing SQ albums in the 80’s...

I'm spaced out enough, Mr. Smithers, and at exactly 2 am every morn I literally SPACE OUT!o_O

So as NOT to be disappointed, that Circus Maximus Cut THE WIND is THE best track on an otherwise mediocre album. Sorry to disappoint.

That sounds like Warewolves of New York.

I’m the same...

Not sure any of that stuff will enter the DV stratosphere...But cool all the same.

And I’m sure I saw that Star Trek film way way back!

Was SQ the last ever releases in (original) Quad? Seems a shame compared to the relative CD-4 and QR tech and sound advances...

Yes SQ was the last quad format still ticking throughout the early eighties, Sansui went silent with QS and CD-4 was the earliest to depart in the prior decade .
You could say that SQ won the format war , but interest in quad was very much gone as far as the purchasing audiophile public .
Sansui did however release a new Decoder (QSD 1000) , but I'm not certain if it was in the early eighties or late seventies.

CD-4 went completely dead in the US in 1975, but they kept releasing them in Japan for a few years (it was something of a moderate sucess there). My Japanese CD-4 copy of Tomita's Bermuda Triangle is dated 1979.

I would say early76 -the final push , from my experience but only as far as WEA is concerned .
Arista released all their initial titles in 76 and followed up with at least 2 more titles , one from Barry Manilow his third cd-4 release, and a S.I.title from Anthony Braxton .

RCA was releasing beyond 75 in North America a few classical titles and I have Tomita Cosmos from 77 or 78.
they also made available 3 Japanese Tomita titles , his Daphnis Chloe title contained a sticker with the U.S. catalogue #. Also Q8 titles for "Ford " , I have 78 and 79 best of tapes.

Japan ? Well they may indeed have continued into the early eighties with both CD-4 and RM (QS) releases , I believe I read somewheres they had a strong consumer market which ensured continuance of quad longer than the rest of their counterparts.
Would be nice to know what and for how long.?

Just a little more cd-4 info fwiw.

WEA Europe for some reason , released at least 3 Quad CD-4 titles in 76 .

Deaf School - 2nd Honeymoon , Ralf McTell - Right Side Up , and Absolute Elsewhere - In Search Of Ancient Gods , all have 76 release dates on their stereo titles which would make them 76 or early 77 CD-4 releases depending on when they were readied .

My RCA USA CD-4 of Tomita - Kosmos is a 78 release .

Most of this information has been gleened from Larry Clifton's MCS Review , which published up to 1986 (or so say my last copies ).
Larry obtained the bulk of his SQ Tate activity release and production information from the Tate affiliate "Ruggles/Reber " (later known as Bogue/Reber ) licensees to the SQ Quad matrix after CBS discontinued their quad program .
Without Larry's publication and journalism , we would be at a loss for most of the 80's activity regarding anything Quad.

Also information was gathered early on from "Evolution " and 4Quad , and Deitrich Rasch's " Quadro-Acktion" all initially monthly newsletters regarding anything quad. (and surround)

As well as continued (very sparse ) coverage on Quad News in some Audio and Video publications.

The Tate SQ camp was involved with agreements to record and complete SQ encoding for a number of artists that were mentioned time and again throughout the 80's, and include some big names in audio .
Whether or not these following Artists completed a quad project or if it was a case of encoded and shelved we may never know , but it's likely some do exist maybe to be released at a future date , and if not SQ quad perhaps in a discrete digital format.

Artists with projects pending in the early eighties :

The Tubes MTV Concert
Devo-Concept album
Lionel Ritchie Special
Barry Manilow
Michael Jackson

and underway in 85 :
Ella Fitzgerald
Dihanne Carroll
John Klemmer
Burt Bacharach
Jack Jones-83 London Special

There of course may have been others but I have no furher info after1986 .

The latest QS releases I can confirm I've seen were Turnabout/Vox classical releases in 1979, but I swear that in one of my boxes of records I've got one that's 1980. I could be mistaken, and it could be an Angel SQ classical from 1980 or 1981.

I always wondered about some of their re-issues on cd. I forget which release I saw but I think it eluded to (in the credits ) that it was from a four channel source or something written similarly .
Stands to reason as VOX was releasing QS S.I. albums in the 70's.
That you think you had an album of theirs released in 1980 in QS , is quite possible given their commitment to the quad format. I certainly do not know when they stopped their quad releases.

From Mark Anderson's QUADRAPHONIC DISCOGRAPHY: Classical Listings
Wow. That's an incredibly impressive list.

Naxos recently purchased Vox, and has generally been entrepreneurial about making their music available in surround, although they also tend to drop out of the market pretty quickly. I do wonder if they could be convinced to offer these Vox releases for download...
