Wasn't OSFA quad a rumor and it turned out it was Roxy that was also mixed in quad?

The 24 bit stereo remasters recently were almost as much as I could think to ever ask for. The quads of course were that one thing I was asking for! I never would have expected the new 12 channel mixes and I sure wouldn't have expected them to be so on point definitive!

So I can't hardly believe all this is happening!

I used to love getting record label / website email updates from various wonderfuls like Burning Shed, Cherry Red, Super Deluxe Edition, etc

I now cringe when I see an update because most likely there will be another new Surround release. This hobby has been EXTREMELY expensive in 2023
and we still have the holiday season release schedule coming

My bank account is weeping

Rickey, remember when we where in a surround desert?
Now, I am starting to hit overload in surround, they just keep coming fast and furious.
Old-timer Bitchin' Rant: I liked the days of DVD-Audio surround and SHM SACD stereo, now the world is too complicated.
They release a Prince album (not one of my faves), and I'm thinking "Meh, I'll pass". Talk about first-world surround collector problems. Wasn't long ago that would be an auto purchase, now I have to pick and choose.

Yum , yum .

Zappa Quad for my tum.

This will be a welcome treat . So next year ...Apostrophe in quad is quite likely.
I get more excited about an old quad mix than I do with 5.1 when both are available on a new release. I do like that a 5.1 mix is done like with Wazoo/Waka, and comes out really great and there never was a quad mix afaik. But these old mixes were done by the artist, are in analog, and more at risk of never coming out unless someone steps up and does it. Looks to me that the Zappa family was fairly disinterested in quad and surround - and only since the Uni acquisition of the vault contents we are seeing these quad and surround being seriously excavated and presented for the consumer.

So it’s super nice that quad masters are finally being thought of as a good incentive for purchase.

I love the idea of listening to these two top FZ albums (including Apostrophe) in high res mixed into quad surround with Frank’s ideas behind the mixing. His good taste and quality control was always obvious.

At the risk of maybe making your bank account weep even more, I'm still hanging out for the next Sony Japan Santana release.

We don't have to buy everything at once as many of these fancy sets are large runs so we can space out the purchases as need be.

Sony Japan has been slow as molasses with new SACDs, Dutton has been on vacation with nothing much offered up for the popular rock and R&B listener. And Rhino has filled in this long gap with a batch of legendary quad masters that were not really that expensive.

Any Zappa in surround is going to be a must have. But I can wait on a Yes album that has previously appeared in a fine SW mix as this one has.

I sure am glad they’re leaving well enough alone and not offering a new stereo mix with these sets. As far as I’m concerned Frank’s original mixes are ‘sacred ground’ so to speak and there’s no need for revisionism in that regard. FZ really knew how to mix stereo, listening on headphones it’s really a trip there’s all kinds of stuff ping-ponging and zipping across the stereo field! I can only imagine the quad is an extension of that greatness.

I'm not complaining, this is great news and an instant buy for me, but I would have loved to see this packaged with Apostrophe, like a 2-fer CD I have from a long time ago. (I thought maybe because they packaged The Grand Wazoo and Waka/Jawaka together that this might be a possibility.)

I think the issue is that they have already released an "Apostrophe (')" Project/Object in 2016 ("The Crux of the Biscuit") and whatever extra studio material has probably all been released on disc 6 of "The Roxy Performances" box (Bolic Studios Recording Session).

However, I can imagine some kind of "The Mothers 1974" release materializing next year including live performances, stuff related to the "One Size Fits All" sessions and maybe surround mixes of "Apostrophe" and that album.

Back to the item discussed in the thread, I am very excited for it. I've been waiting for something like this since the first time I saw the Classic Albums documentary! This and "Funky Nothingness" are two of my biggest Zappa holy grails released back to back!

That wouldn’t make too much sense as Apostrophe was recorded (mostly) in early 1973 along with Over-Nite Sensation.

Most of OSFA was recorded in August 1974 and January 1975 with a slightly altered lineup, including Chester Thompson on drums rather than Ralph Humphrey.

Chester did join in late 1973 however when Ralph was still in the band as they both play in the December 1973 shows at the Roxy.

Whatever they do, I can’t see them ignoring Apostrophe in its quad mix being that it’s prolly FZ’s best selling 70’s album. I like it more than Over-Night Sensation.

Universal is hot on this catalog and wants to issue everything with any commercial potential in it.

We will get it in due time.
