I am a new member and long time Quad owner over the years I have just used the 2 channel converson to Quad on the sansui QRX 5500 and have never used the discrete function.

That (surround) function should have been promoted much more. The lack of quad program material IMHO was one of the reasons that quad failed. The vario-matrix surround function makes stereo sound like true quad. The stereo mix is pulled apart and spread around the room. I have always said that it is like listening to stereo through a magnifying glass!

The only way to listen to stereo!
