If it was up to Sony they surely wouldn't have put dvd-audio on there.

We learned from Steven Wilson himself that he was the one to pursuade SONY to use DVD-A for the 1st two ELP issues. They were pretty sucessful, so its easy to see SONY continuing with that format. What wasn't expected by SONY was the "unique" 5.1 mix that was submitted to them. I still think that a last minute decision was made to pull the 5.1 from all but the box set to avoid thousands od unhappy customers who bought the 3DC set. Just my $.02.

This whole mess just makes the 1st two SW ELP mixes more precious. I was playing them over the last weekend. What a joy they are.

And pulling the 5.1 from the 3disc set does not result in any unhaooy customers? My guess is that pulling the mix results in much more unhappy customers than leaving the mix on the 3 disc set where only a few minutes are questionable.

This mess is lame.

But it's not like we didn't already have a 5.1 mix of BSS, so the prejudice is lessened (is that a word ? sorry I'm French ^^)

Now waiting for Trilogy. And Hot Seat, as it's "a classic album" :D

Monsieur,

You are the first Frenchman I know who ever apologized for being French. ;)

No worries m8, any ELP still kicks the crap out of anything recorded in the 1980s!(just kidding 80's fanboys, don't call your Menudo lovin henchmen after me...)

We all can't wait for Trilogy, but the pressure is really on. Like you said, we already had an excellent mix of BSS, so this debacle is only a matter of wasted $$$.
If somebody screws the pooch on the Trilogy release we will all suffer.

For my good friend RVD:

"Screw the pooch" •to make an irreparable (possibly tragic) mistake

I'm not proud of this, but I broke down and got the super deluxe. I do love the album, and perhaps it will go up in value anyways. My advice....don't bother with it. The mix just doesn't give me the same feeling as the previous 5.1 mix, it just isn't as enjoyable. And Jakko did a brilliant job of transforming Karn Evil 9 3rd impression into a bass solo (with band and vocal accompaniment). Maybe the bass doesn't bury everything, but it sticks out like a sore thumb. I can't imagine anyone listening to that mix and not coming back with a suggestion to back that off a bit, it baffles me that this was released like that. A bad mix is a bad mix, and that song is plain and simple a bad mix, which is a shame. Try and justify it or find the good in it all you want, the bass is up too much and sticks out, it's plain and simple wrong.

Waste of money. Just stick with the original 5.1.

I paid $20.00 for my BSS back in the day, saw it go to $300.00 on flea bay once, thought about selling it, but glad as hell I kept it! Thanks for the heads up!

What bothers me most about the KE3 3rd Impression 5.1. remix, apart from the apparent over prominence of the bass guitar, is the inexplicable disappearance of the opening timpanies. Either they have been mixed out, or they got drowned in overly emphasized Hammond distortion. I don't understand how this slipped past Jakko's quality control. Other than that, I am quite happy with the 5.1 remix. I don't have the 2000 DVD-A of BSS, so I can't compare, but maybe that is a good thing.
