This is the thread to argue till your blue in the face about LFE and it's uses in music and movies!

HAVE AT IT!!!!

I say no using the LFE channel for multichannel music - let the end user decide whether or not he needs to bass manage a mix, either because his sats are too small (room size or decor issues) or he/she just likes what a sub can do for the low bass frequencies.

The LFE adds another element, I try mixing with it a lot. I'd be a fool not to try it. If it's not suiting the material I take it out.

It might make sense to mention the tracks considered are bass guitars (4 string 8 string, low B 4 string), Taurus bass pedals, MIDI bass pedals with pipe organ voices and certain drum elements.

For commercial releases, it should be there and people can throttle it well enough for themselves I'd think. Label the product or include an insert discussing the options. Select the panties-not-in-wad mode......

Tis better to have a subwoofer and not need it, than to need a subwoofer and not have it.

^ If you need a signal to activate your subwoofer - and IMO not everybody needs one if their sats are large enough - a subwoofer channel can be created by the receiver's bass management system on the playback end.

I'm no LFE/subwoofer channel expert, but I've read enough about it to know that adding a sub channel to a multichannel music mix, either made up of bass from the other channels, or an isolated instrument, can cause problems at the playback end in a bass managed system - which I am sure make up the majority of surround systems out there - when all those separate signals from the studio mix AND the receiver's bass management system meet up at the subwoofer i.e. phase anomalies. But what if your system consists of five Large Advents and no sub? Then you have to program your receiver for "no sub" and now the studio's sub channel has to be folded into the front left/right channels - I sure hope they don't interfere with each other......:(

When playing for example the David Crosby dvd-audio, which features a 5.0 mix, everything sounds great. No sub channel doesn't seem to have a negative effect. I haven't done any controlled scientific testing, but to me many 5.1 mixes don't always seem to sound as good through my system.

They wouldn't mix it out of phase (unless that's the way they wanted it). Interference would come from sub placement. That's why many subs have phase control. When the same frequency comes from more than one speaker it can cancel or amplify (or in between) that frequency depending upon where they are in relation to each other. That's why sub setup is considered such a big deal and such a PITA.

I'll just keep my vintage system. That way, the bass is always going to my 8 Advents all the time and I don't have to tell my amps or receivers to send it there - or not.

There is definitely something to be said for simplicity!

Well Said!!! I'm using my set-up for everything including movies so a sub is required. I could always turn it off if I wanted for music but I don't. As to having specific LFE content in a music mix it is not required and probably should not be done.

Come on! These are not ex wives we are talking about. I try to keep my TV's the same proportionate distance from my speakers as my eyes are from my ears. That way the world is in harmony.

Bringing up the ex-wives really brings this thread into a darker place. :D I have to go and shiver for a while.
