Do any of you have any of these and if so can you recommend which are worth having in 5.1..I have found a source but not being familiar with the quality I can only guess.....I can almost guess that the early Beatles will not sound right in 5.1 but I am really interested in Revolver, Rubber Soul, Sgt. Peppers and White album ...also Yellow Submarine

I can say without question that they are all worth seeking out. And don't forget Abbey Road.

I know it's an old thread, but I didn't want to have duplicates floating around...

Opinions on these?

On a more general scale -- are upmixes generally any better than what your receiver can do?

Thanks!

Best,
EW

Depends on who did it, and how.
The TOUP stuff is not done in the same way as the recievers decoders would use, but by a series of extractions from the stereo - and then taking the extractions (In "Pepper" there are 8 to 10 per track) and mixing them back together again.
Other methods include Ambisonic expansion, and various other tricks generally involving Phase & Comb Filtering amongst others.
There are some real treats available, but a heck of a lot of dross that should be avoided as you would a dose of the clap.
