I do not understand the reasons to reissue music at a specific point in time

For every serious buyer, there's a hundred buyers that ride on trends when purchasing, and 50th Anniversary editions are a good marketing tactic to get people to buy. 46th Anniversary doesn't quite roll off the tongue the same way...

And 50th anniversary edition leaves the option to release future anniversary editions. New releases after the ‘definitive edition’ is released is harder to market probably.

Phil Collins was right when he kept his options open when doing his ‘first farewell tour’….

Related to that is the press coverage you can get for a major anniversary like 50th. The difference between a 50th and 46th (or something else) can mean the difference between a music magazine cover feature (and they do still exist) and a smaller feature or just a typical review. A 50th may also get extra coverage outside the typical music press depending on the artist.

It’s easy to forget that we’re kind of the oddballs in this hobby... hanging on every word, tracking every rumor, getting excited when we get a shipping notice, voting on polls, etc. We’re just as happy with a 37th anniversary as 50th. But we’re the easy sales. There’s a world beyond us that isn’t quite as tuned in, but are a legitimate market that may respond better to certain things... like a 50th anniversary. But that’s just my take on it.
