Prompted by an idea from my friend steelydave,
I thought it might be fun for QQ members to chip in with their findings
and info on the engineers of the Quadraphonic era.

Don Puluse was also one of the original the engineers on some of the early Chicago albums (II, III and Carnegie Hall) before they moved to Caribou Ranch and Wayne Tarnowski (who I think was basically a junior/assistant at Columbia NYC) took over all of their engineering up until they parted company with their producer/manager James William Guercio after Chicago XI in late 1977/early 1978.

Someone can correct me if I'm wrong here, but I'm pretty sure all the Stax quad releases used the stereo jackets with a sticker put on top denoting SQ and the modified matrix number. If that's the case, this picture would be the closest we have as to information about who was responsible for them. It's also no surprise how good the Stax quad mixes are given that they were apparently done at the Columbia studios with the Columbia guys overseeing them. I think this is all the Stax quad mixes:

The discogs entry for the Immersion box set of this has the following credits:

Mixed By [4.0 Quad Mix (1975)] – Brian Humphries
Mixed By [4.0 Quad Mix (1975), Assistant] – Peter James


The discogs entry for Weather Report's 'Mysterious Traveller' has Ron Malo credited as the engineer for the stereo version, and Ron Malo, Tim Geelan for the quad version so it seems most likely that Tim Geelan did the quad mix. The credits for 'Tale Spinnin' only list Bruce Botnick as the engineer in both the stereo and quad entries - it's not definitive but given he did that EW&F quad mix around the same time, it wouldn't be surprising if he did the quad mix of Tale Spinnin' given he did the stereo one. I think he's active in the Pono community forums so it may be possible to ask him about this.

Do any of those EMI albums that have had the quad mixes released on CD+DVD sets have quad remix credits in the booklets? Thinking of titles like Electric Light Orchestra, Ten Years After, Barclay James Harvest, and even the two Gentle Giant albums, Interview and Free Hand.

Great thread Adam. It really appeals to the music geek in me! I have to read album notes to find out who wrote the music, played, where it was recorded, who engineered, produced and mixed them.

The discogs entry for the Immersion box set of this has the following credits:

Mixed By [4.0 Quad Mix (1975)] – Brian Humphries
Mixed By [4.0 Quad Mix (1975), Assistant] – Peter James


The discogs entry for Weather Report's 'Mysterious Traveller' has Ron Malo credited as the engineer for the stereo version, and Ron Malo, Tim Geelan for the quad version so it seems most likely that Tim Geelan did the quad mix. The credits for 'Tale Spinnin' only list Bruce Botnick as the engineer in both the stereo and quad entries - it's not definitive but given he did that EW&F quad mix around the same time, it wouldn't be surprising if he did the quad mix of Tale Spinnin' given he did the stereo one. I think he's active in the Pono community forums so it may be possible to ask him about this.

Do any of those EMI albums that have had the quad mixes released on CD+DVD sets have quad remix credits in the booklets? Thinking of titles like Electric Light Orchestra, Ten Years After, Barclay James Harvest, and even the two Gentle Giant albums, Interview and Free Hand.

Good thinking! :upthumb I've added the info for Quad engineers on GG's In'terview & Free Hand, BJH/Once Again, Tubular Bells and Deep Purple's Stormbringer. The ELO Quad DVD, Ten Years After Quad DVD and Deep Purple/Machine Head Quad SACD don't list the Quad engineers unfortunately.

Great thread Adam. It really appeals to the music geek in me! I have to read album notes to find out who wrote the music, played, where it was recorded, who engineered, produced and mixed them.

Thanks Duncan but steelydave must take the credit it was the kernel of his idea that got me "reelin in the engineers"..

Edit: So.. seeing as I mentioned reelin in the engineers (and stowin away the quads).. here is a poser.. does anybody know who remixed those three Steely Dan albums into Quad?

It would be good if Audio Fidelity could release them

Tell me about it! Fantasy also owns the CCR catalog which was released on SACD by Analogue Productions but in Stereo only. I truly wonder if AP would go through the trouble of issuing Quad mixes. I hope AF gets to pull that rabbit out of the hat. I'd buy every one of them.

Regrettably only Gold was released in quad. I have not heard if quad mixes for any full albums exist and Mr. Hoffman isn't doing new mixes from multis, only cleaning up existing 4.0 mixes. That said, I would buy all the albums in 4.0 or at least Gold if it came out. Anything modern has to be better than my 8 track.
