They should have consulted him on For All Mankind. I had a problem with that scene where the character grabbed the record level control on the 8-track player when they were meant to grab a volume control.

Great clip, I don't remember seeing any 8-track albums in 1978 in the UK, so I was surprised when he played The Cars debut!

As for explaining things to the younger generation, my 26 & 24 year old niece & nephew don't quite get why at 66 I'm going to music festivals (off tomorrow to The Levellers, Beautiful Days Fest), and I've got to go next year as it will be 50 years since I first went to one (Knebworth 1975, Pink Floyd!). So 8-tracks are like a horse and cart level technology to them!

I wonder if 8-tracks will make a comeback like the LPs have. You know, younger folks buying them just because it's the thing to do even if they have no way of playing them.
Cassettes, I know, are making somewhat of a comeback but doubtful the clunky 8 track cartridge will re~emerge as a viable alternative!

Don't know about the rest of the world, but in North America 8-tracks were around into the early 80's. Here's a Genesis album from 1982:

And even after 8-tracks stopped being available in record stores, the record clubs still continued to manufacture them up through the late 80's. These are pretty rare so some of these can fetch large sums of cash these days. Here's The Joshua Tree which can go for over $100 on Discogs.

I'm not going to look it up but I imagine Taylor Swift already has 17 different Victrola cylinder copies of her last re-recorded album (each with a different bonus alternate mix), 30 8-tracks, 40 cassettes, and 5 wire recording spools. (Each again with unique special mixes.)

There's an early release of Three Sides Live that's Four Sides Live with outtakes from Seconds Out on side 4. Not making this part up. Probably not too far off with the former though!

And most ironically, the price of these cassettes are sometimes MORE than if one were to buy a lossless Pure Blu~Ray audio disc in multichannel ATMOS!
