So........finally making a backup of my music files by copying files from NAS to a portable 8TB device.

I was looking at my NAS configuration (since I didn't know what I was doing when I first got it) and I still have questions I guess. When I hover over Drive 1, it says SHR. I don't really understand what that means....and yes, I did read up, but I still don't get it. What I can tell you is that all my music is on Drive 1 and it's about 98% full (4TB) So, when I'm ripping new music, will the music "automatically" go to Drive 2 once Drive 1 is 100% full?

SHR = Synology Hybrid RAID. So if you have different HDD sizes it is efficient, in that on a normal RAID if one disc is smaller than the other then that is all you get so 2x smallest disc size, SHR gets round that and it also allows you to add discs (in a multi-bay NAS) and it will automatically increase the size of your RAID system. However, as far as I can work out if you have a 2x HDD NAS with identical HDD sizes you are better off setting up as a RAID 1. In a 2 HDD RAID you should have the same data spread across both discs, so if you lose one HDD the system can repair itself when you replace the disc. If your Drive 2 is empty then you do not have a RAID or SHR system, just 2 HDDs in a NAS, so no way of recovering the data should one fail. I have mine set up as RAID 1 with 2x identical HDD, so if the system reports it is 98% full that would be both discs are at 98%.

Yeah, I'm sure I don't have things set up correctly. And, I know I make this more complicated that it should be....but when I read user manual, it just doesn't speak in a language that I understand........I can be pretty thick headed about this stuff. I wish there were a tutorial for dummies...seriously. In a nutshell, what I want is a NAS system that can handle all my flac files, be smart enough to make a backup.........and give me some protection. I just don't know what that looks like, nor do I know how to initiate it. Considering where I'm at right now....

What a pain in the ass. So, I'm simply copying chunks of flac files onto my 8TB device. It works for a while, but when I walk away, I typically get an error message. I click "retry" and off it goes. I mean, why do I have so many errors in doing what I think is a simple task? At this rate, it will take 2 weeks to perform a backup to my music.

Then, with all the error messages I get......I don't have a lot of confidence that all the songs are getting copied. How would I easily know???? ugh

If you have a 2 drive NAS your only option for ‘automatic’ backup using RAID or SHR is disk mirroring. If one of your disks is 98% full then disk mirroring means you 2nd disk will be 98% full too.

So if you want to implement RAID or SHR disk mirroring you need to buy two new (bigger) hard drives.

What size drives do you have now? If you’ve filled one already you need to double the current size at a minimum.

The 2nd problem in I don’t think you can create RAID from two existing disks. You’ve got to reinstall. So start by backing up you current NAS disk to the USB drive. After that install two new disks as a RAID then copy the backup onto the NAS.

Scanning around on line it can occur for a number of reasons, one was to do with copying large files. Is your USB HDD back-up connected directly to your NAS (then the error shouldn't occur) or are you using your PC as the host (in which case it could). I recently backed-up my Zyxel NAS by directly connecting a USB HDD to it and getting it to copy directly.

Yes, using my PC as a means of copying files. So, how do I connect directly?

If you Google search that error code: 0x8007003B Unexpected network error

Looks like its solved with network changes and/or disabling virus protection. Are you copying via WiFi or Ethernet?

Look up ROBOCOPY, which is included with Windows. It can be used to perform the actual backup, but more specific to your "How would I easily know?" question, it can be used to only tell you what it thinks needs to be copied without actually performing the copy.

It's slightly painful to set up the first time, but worth it in the long run.

I’ve not used USB Copy, looks interesting. Gene, you’ll need to install it from ‘Packages’.

I use RoboCopy in Windows since it only new and copies changed files. I just have a batch file for each of my NAS volume backup drives, I don’t need to worry about what I may have changed or added. Just run the same batch file and let RobyCopy work it out.

I'd delete all that has transferred already onto your USB HDD, then plug your External USB HDD into your NAS, and follow the instructions from Synology copy to USB HDD
OK, I finally got this all working. Since I'm a worry-wart, now I'm wondering how long this will take to mirror 4TB of music onto the 8TB external drive? The Synology gives no sort of indication....it just flashes which "file" it's copying.

For my first "backup", I chose Mirroring as I knew I wanted a complete backup that was identical to what's on my NAS. Still, I don't understand the difference between Mirroring and Incremental. Seems they are the same, only worded slightly different....

  • Mirroring: Each time the task runs, all changes made in the source folder will be copied to the destination, making the destination folder a complete mirror copy of the source.
  • Incremental: Each time the task runs, newly added and modified source files will be copied to the destination.

OK, it's 6:20 AM Central time...and it's still chugging along. It doesn't give me a percentage completed, just says copying and some file names flash here and there. Oh boy....so that's 9 straight hours.
