Whie checking some saved images from Ebay auction i've just realized one thing about "bootleg" or "truck stop" Q8 (real or fake): these pirates tapes seems to be present only in the very early quad days.
For example, titles up to 1972 were done (Lennon Imagine, Carole King Tapestry, Santana Abraxas, Switched on Bach, Floyd Cramer, Hugo Montenegro and many others...) but i've never seen on Ebay anything from 1973 onward: Deep Purple, Pink Floyd, Eagles, Joni Mitchell, BTO, Santana GH... these aren't titles that sold few copies, and stereo boots were done.
Anyone has more infos on the pirates Q8?

In the USA we didn't have the circled "P" copyright date on our sound recordings until 1972. Coincidence?

U.S. Copyright Law {Title 17 U.S.C. Section 101 et seq., Title 18 U.S.C., Section 2319 and Section 2319A}:

Federal law protects sound recordings first "fixed" as of February 15, 1972. The law protects copyright owners from the unauthorized reproduction or distribution of sound recordings to the public.

Section 2319 applies only to those recordings that are "fixed" with authorization on or after February 15, 1972 (that is, when the performance is put into a tangible form such as a record or tape).

Those recordings "fixed" prior to February 15, 1972, are protected by criminal law through a state's statute, and by civil law through a state's competition laws.

I remember how most truck-stops seemed to have stacks of these bootleg tapes, mostly 8-tracks and a few cassettes. Then they all seemed to disapear from the market overnight.

This may be part of the reason, but not all: ordinary stereo 8 track pirated tapes continued to be made later (see example on the photo), but no quads at all.
