Can I listen to a Quad mix on a standard 5.1 or Atmos equipment?

My gear doesn't either. But if I pass a 4.0 file to my son (Pioneer 7.1 AVR), it plays in stereo with only 2 of the 4 channels.

My point is, why doesn't Rhino format Quadio releases as 5.1? Same issue with quad floyd inside the immersion box sets I believe.
I don't know, LMQ. I could have sworn they were but when I press the info button on the remote the OSD says 4.0 input.
Still have an older Onkyo that won't play 4 channel without adding at least a silent C but it's not used these days. I mean it's not ancient, it's 5.1.2 Atmos capable so I guess about 2016.

All those are indeed delivered in 4.0

I imagine they're thinking they followed an official release spec and they're waiting for the equipment maker to say "uncle". Probably more like slowly realizing there's a crop of stand alone disc players, AVRs, and even software apps with a bug that looks like it's not going to be fixed and thus slow to start pushing a workaround. Which is also a kind of "shots fired" statement and calls out the mistake in a strong way. "We altered our product to work with your mistake!"

For anyone reading and wondering if they're suffering with operator error, the point is you didn't do anything wrong, there's a bug, and this is how you work around it. And yeah, it was this big of a blunder!

When your priorities are silencing audio, blanking out video, (ie HDMI tricks) or making hardware based encoder/decoder products required to access media, you probably miss things, right?

I think in the recollected past I've only had one AVR that did not like pure 4 channel. (I still have it but it's not in use).
This is the Onkyo TX-NR656 I believe.
Somewhere after the 609 they changed media chips. Not sure what they are using now but my TX-RZ50 has no problems with it.
