Don Everly has passed away (age 84). Phil, the other half of the Everly Brothers duo, passed away a few years ago. Their music is part of my musical growth and it is built into my DNA.

Their harmonies remain unsurpassed in rock music and, needless to say, were essential to the foundation of rock & roll. Personally, a very sad time for me.

In about 1963, I had a Warner Brothers 45 EP with "Muskrat", "Don't Blame Me", "Walk Right Back", and "Lucille" on it. I played and played it until I wore it out.

I have all four of those songs, and many others, on CD now. The recording was magnificent in those days.

RIP, Mr. Everly. You too, Phil.

There's an article on AOL and the author gets Don's identification wrong in the photo and also states Don sang the high harmonies.

There's really no excuse.

Bye Bye Love was one of the very first 45 singles I was given as a child. Later, in 1984, I saw the Everly Brothers reunion concert on TV and EB 1984 was subsequently one of the very first compact discs I purchased. It's not a bad album; their version of Lay, Lady. Lay knocks the socks off Dylan's own.

When they sang, it was like one voice that could sing two parts at once, they were THAT together.

I just got done playing the 20 song CD of their greatest hits on Cadence and the 12 Greatest hits CD on Warner Brothers, in succession so that's 32 songs in a row. Usually, when I play greatest hits compilations, I am waiting for some songs to get over so the ones I really want to hear come up. Not once, during these 32 songs did I find myself doing that.

And, "Muskrat" kicks more ass than 99% of all other rock songs.

With singing duos, great harmonizing of beautiful melodies always matter most.

For the Everly Brothers it was always this song, written by Felice and Boudleaux Bryant of course that, for me, defined their gorgeous sound...

"Devoted To You"

Darlin' you can count on me
Till the sun dries up the sea
Until then I'll always be devoted to you

I'll be yours through endless time
I'll adore your charms sublime
Guess by now you know that I'm devoted to you

I'll never hurt you, I'll never lie
I'll never be untrue
I'll never give you reason to cry
I'd be unhappy if you were blue

Through the years my love will grow
Like a river it will flow
It can't die because I'm so devoted to you

I'll never hurt you, I'll never lie
I'll never be untrue
I'll never give you reason to cry
I'd be unhappy if you were blue

Through the years my love will grow
Like a river it will flow
It can't die because I'm so devoted to you
