I am listening to the Blu ray now.

Great songs, uptempo fun, wonderful musicianship, great mastering. Not too discrete unfortunately. Yes there are bongos in the wides at very low levels and a double stereo effect on rears but this is very front heavy. ALL solos are in the fronts, nothing overhead. Bit of a let down, I would have liked many of those parts elsewhere. 7 for me.

Pardon this off-topic post, but fans of Goodwin might be interested in this latest project, which Goodwin co-produced with Quartet San Francisco. No Atmos mix, unfortunately--at least no mention of one yet--even though it was recorded by Leslie Ann Jones at Skywalker Sound:

As a kid who grew up watching Bugs Bunny cartoons, much of this music was instantly recognizable to me. There is a passage in there that I believe Rush "borrowed" in La Villa Strangiato.

I was introduced to Gordon Goodwin via the high poll rating on QQ, for Big Phat Band XXL.
Which is brilliant. I subsequently bought all his other releases in surround.

Unfortunately, this one doesn't quite reach the same heights for me. As the Atmos is not as strong as I would like.

Having said that, it's still a joy to listen to.

The musicianship and choice of songs are top dollar which combined make this an excellent release .

If it wasn't for the Atmos mix I would vote 10

Instead, it's a Big Phat 9

Yeah - that’s from an old jazz tune called “Powerhouse”:

Lots of versions out there that are way better recorded, but even the grime all over this early Benny Goodman take doesn’t stop the fun and “power” of the song and performance! The part that Rush bit (no doubt from Looney Tunes exposure, I’d also guess) starts around 1:43.

Hmmm…I’d bite on a surround mix of that…🤔

Yep. Carl Stalling, the legendary Warner Brothers arranger, was a huge fan of Raymond Scott.

I'd love to learn that one was made. Leslie Ann Jones (Spike Jones's daughter!) is no stranger to immersive mixing, and a couple of recent big band records with mixes by Jim Anderson & Ulrike Schwarz were recorded at Skywalker Sound.

Big Goodwin Fan! I will be getting this!

I have see them perform a few times. Their musicianship is off the charts. I have all their multichannel discs and love the big band recordings and mixes. This one has The Incredibles soundtrack medley a favorite of mine.
I don't think this the best discrete mix they have done, so I am giving it a Big Phat 9. If you like the cool era big band sound nothing beats the Big Phat Band and this is a great recording.

I'm sure most of Gordons fans here are aware but some great big band
recordings to go along with these are those from his some time drummers
band Bernie Dresel, AKA The BBB.
https://www.berniedresel.com/He's done a number of releases in the whole array of multich formats including
Auro 3D. Great music and great mixes
All have been covered here but just sayin -----------------
