I've only had a chance to watch about the first half of this; and they seem to credit Steely Dan as being the igniting force behind the whole genre. However, not sure how I feel about Steely Dan being the 'paterfamilias' of "Yacht Rock"

Beato's take on this... Donny boy, the pipes, the pipes are calllllinggg...
I've watched the Dock. to the end now, and although I was entertained, I agree with Donald & Beato.
...seems to me to be more of a social environment rather than a boiled down attempt at a genre classification
