Jeez, will wonders ever cease? I've actually found a few Silverline/Sanctuary titles that don't suck! These titles contain honest-to-goodness surround mixes (as opposed to the fake surround from stereo that are still being cranked out by the label). I had to dig a lot of dirt to find a few gems, but here they are:
- Van Zant - Brother To Brother
Ronnie Van Zant of Lynyrd Skynyrd is long gone, but his siblings are still carrying his torch. I was very skeptical of this release but it is surprisingly good! Solid song-writing and very professional production.
- Motorhead - Ace Of Spades
Unlike most of the heavy metal that came out of the 80's, this album is straight-ahead no bullshit, stripped down rock and roll. Killer riffs and a bad attitude keep this one sounding as fresh today as it did 20 years ago. This one's a keeper!
- Ministry - Animositisomina
If you like your surround mix all over the map, then this one is for you. It is loud, aggressive and schizophrenic as hell! A masochistic ride that drills through your psyche. I like it!
- Blue Oyster Cult - A Long Day’s Night
This one is live but it is a bona-fide surround recording. The band is tight and the performances are hot. Unfortunately, the recording is not the best fidelity and sounds somewhat muffled and claustrophobic... but not overly so. I mean, it's still very enjoyable but it could be better. I don't know if I got a defective disc or what, but my player refuses to play the MLP tracks. I had to rely on the DD tracks. If anyone else picks this up, please let me know if you run into the same problem.
The last title on my list of "Silverline Gold" is the only one that does not fall under the Silverline/Sanctuary banner. This one is actually from Immergent, but they're all part of 5.1 Entertainment, so I figure it’s worth mentioning.
- Gus Black - Uncivilized Love
This one caught me by surprise. I didn't really know what to expect. I had never even heard of the guy before. I am happy to report that I enjoyed this one a great deal! I would say that Gus Black's style is reminiscent of Beck's, but with more of a contemporary pop focus. Excellent song-writing and production. The surround mix is strong but a tad on the conservative side, but I think it fits well with Gus' approach here.
