Please post your thoughts and comments on this massive deluxe package from King Crimson. Along with multiple CDs and a ton of stuff is a Blu-Ray disc with a 24/96 DTS-HD 5.1 version of the 2009 surround mix of "Red" along with a lot of other material (alas, there are no marbles)

It's a big (and expensive) Woo-Hoo! for the big time King Crimson fans.

Ug. Sorry folks. I should have posted this 5.1 only review elsewhere...All apologies.



I'm just going to comment of the 5.1 Studio release of this behemoth.

01: Wow! What a pleasure it is to rediscover Bruford's drum work on Red, which I always felt was a tad "muddied" in the original stereo mix. The nuance of his snare work is particularly evident in this 5.1 take. This is a drool inducing joy to behold!

02. The guitar on Another Red Nightmare is wonderfully aggressive and is playfully placed in the mix. And the unique tones, layers of mid-range Frippery, are just delightful. Nightmare is indeed the standout track on this release.

03. The 5.1 does capture and celebrate the interlocking of Wetton and Bruford, Starless is a perfect example of what these two could do together.

04. The Cello/Bass mix in the mid section of Red, with the menacing 8th note staccato Fripp in the rears, is exactly why I adore 5.1. Wilson NAILED it.

05. Menu's are well designed, with utility considered over look and feel.

Cons:

01. In terms of face crushing power, I think the new Stereo remaster beats the 5.1. This era of Crimson always relied on the "dark glue" of a live, compressed sound stage. The 5.1, while really wonderful, does mute some of the cohesiveness of this recording.

02. The low mid's in Wetton's tone suffer here. And, in fairness, I've always thought the bass was a little weak on this recording. It's clear Wilson respects the "integrity" of the original offering, yet I, for one, would not have minded a "little more" EQ massage on the bass. Because, as the live tracks will tell us (Great Deceiver anyone?) Wetton's Bass tone was a f&$king MONSTER onstage. Could that tone be invoked by EQ? Is it even on the master tapes? I remain curious.

03. The vocal seems a tad too forward for my tastes, I found it a little distracting.

Conclusion

While Wilson and Co. are clearly hitting a stride of 5.1 mastery, Red may be the one release that proves difficult in re-imagining for a 5.1 sound stage. While surely a treat to behold, and a simple MUST OWN for even a mild lover of this album, it's the Stereo mix (not the 5.1) that delivers the evil, aggressive promise that made this line-up so beautifully unsettling. Still, if one had to choose a 5.1 home run for this era of Crimson, I'd lean to the Wilson Larks' Tongue release over Red (for both 5.1 sonics and content.)

Apart from the surround stuff (which is great, probably my 2nd favorite 5.1 mix next to DSOTM), it's really the live material that makes this worth getting. Starless as well but this set particularly shows KC as a well-oiled machine. Even on "off" nights (corresponding with what Fripp writes in the diaries included in the set), they were mind-blowingly good. Very raw-sounding for a progressive band, and none of the material has lost it's bite 40 years later.
 
Oh and not to gloat, but none other than John Wetton himself responded to one of my Tweets when I was sending out my thoughts.
 
The 24/192 HD transfers of the 5 multitracked shows mixed to stereo are the crown jewel of this set!
Holy dynamic range Batman! Just stunning wide open dynamic live mixes. Probably better than being at the show! (And OMG did these get stepped on when excerpts were originally released in that Great Deceiver box set! Those lo-fi scraps can be tossed out now. Funny... that was my favorite release of all time when it came out. Almost passed out in the music store when I first saw it.) Yeah, so this box is also the official release of the USA show (one of the 5) now.

The 5.1 mix of the album is an upgraded master here vs. the original DVDA release.
Something happened with that DVDA in mastering... The 5.1 mix was downsampled to 48k for one thing. This shouldn't be night and day or even approach the loss of a 24 bit to 16 bit reduction for example. Usually the only time you can hear some kind of loss from the lower sample rates (44.1k, 48k) if if the program material has already been compromised in some way. Maybe analog generation loss in it's history or a previous digital conversion. That kind of thing can snowball in weird ways sometimes (photocopy of a photocopy of a...). Something like that must have happened here.

That combined with a little less punch in the low mids in the bass combined with the extra bite in the bass distortion in the opening track made me not like it originally. I actually emailed DGM questioning if I maybe got a bad disc. They're a really friendly bunch and they sent me a new disc - which was exactly the same. So I felt like a schmuck and just enjoyed the upgraded 24/96 transfer of the stereo mix.

Listening to the 5.1 mix from the 24/96 files now and suddenly Steve Wilson is a genius again and the 5.1 mix is excellent! The new mix decisions in Red work now. (Again, it's not reasonable that a 48k reduction should have caused that much damage... but there it is.)

I did immediately like the live bonus tracks the 1st time though. The 5.1 mixes of the improves. And now those sound a little better too.

And then a dozen board tapes cleaned up with a lot of labor of love. (A few unreleased even if you've been keeping up with the fan club releases.)

If you love this band and treasure the live recordings, this release is mandatory!
 
might as well note here too: the only commercially available digital version of original 1975 vinyl mix and mastering of USA is the needledrop found on BluRay disc 2 of the Road to Red box. It's not on any of the CD or DVD discs in the same set.
 
And as far as the BluRay 5.1 of Red on The Road to Red goes...I've checked thte title track out in waveform view, and it's definitely a new mastering, quite different in some ways from the 2009 DVDA. I think it's mostly new EQ.

- the front left and right channels are now limited, whereas before they showed no signs of limiting. however this hasn't affected the measured 'dynamic range' much (a few tenths of a dB *higher* DR in the new one) so the DR change is likely down to new EQ and/or some kind of noise reduction (the minimum RMS power on the new mastering is definitely lower than the old, on all channels)

- the center channel is essentially unchanged (unless there's been some subtle EQ that barely budges the waveform)

- the LFE on the BluRay is louder by about 10dB, and EQ'd differently (it now extends a bit beyond 400 Hz, whereas the older one cuts off at 250; the peak amplitude now occurs at ~85 Hz rather than 60)

- the surround channels are mores subtly different, they have been made slightly louder and possibly re-EQd. No evidence of limiting.

I haven't done frequency analysis on any channel except LFE, so I can't specify what EQ may or may not have changed (beyond the obvious limiting)

this is all rather surprising....the packaging calls this the '2009 Surround mix' which seems to be true, but it's certainly been fiddled with.

I've corrected this on the previous post (I had the two backwards in some ways). Anyway, you can see what the difference is here (the yellow trace is the LFE of 'Red' from the 2009 DVDA; the red trace is the same channel/track on the BluRay):

The frequency profiles (for the title track at least) of the front LCR channels seems to actually be unchanged from DVDA to BluRay...except that the new mastering has them both at slightly lower level (by a half dB) , and there's a narrow notch of -1 dB at ~230 Hz, on the new one compared to old...odd. I don't see this on the surround channels. So the combined effect is

-- front (LCR) channels now slightly lower in level compared to rear channels than they were before...though there has been limiting in the L&R! And the EQ is different at 230Hz (less energy in the immediate neighborhood of that frequency than there was before)

-- LFE channel is louder, has notably different EQ (esp between 60-80Hz), and is more extended in range

I think the combined effect would be audible...especially the fiddling with the LFE

Yeah the way they formatted the text isn't the cleanest way. Bet that show was outstanding. I never saw Crim until after Thrak; probably 8 or so since.
I just wish that this Toronto show was available on its own. The only Toronto I see available is from 2015, and I wasn't at that one. Been living in Florida since 2004
