I was in 8th grade when Hybrid Theory came out, so unlike many reviewers on this site, I’m definitely in the target demographic for this music. And from a classic Linkin Park fan, this mix is an easy 10. The recent return of Linkin Park has made me want to review this disc. Regrettably, the new Linkin Park album From Zero is only available in stereo, which is a shame since the band knows how to do surround well. The DVD-A of Reanimation is a triumph.
When Reanimation first came out, I saw it as a somewhat pointless retread of Hybrid Theory (though I have always recognized Krwlng is one of the best tracks of the nu metal genre). The surround mix, especially its remixy elements, made me realize why this album is an essential part of the Linkin Park catalogue. All of the channels of the 5.1 are used to the max, and the synth techno elements coming from the rears adds so much texture. It’s surround sound done right. The bass feels a tad heavy at times, but that’s consistent with the musical style. This music is big! That “go away!” buildup from “Plc.4 Mie Haed” is super intense, along with many great moments on this disc. The hard panning and oscillation between speakers in many spot sounds very cool. This disc is very loud, but that should come as no surprise. Linkin Park rules!
