3 Doors Down - The Better Life

Really nice subtle mix. Loser has a great intro and there’s some excellent discrete moments. Sounds great! I can’t see it on Apple Music, only Tidal/Amazon at the mo? Sure it’ll be there at some point...

Agree with the start of ‘Loser’. Never heard this song prior.

Kryptonite has some strange vocal placement on the downmix from Atmos to quad. Thankfully Loser doesn't have the same mix style on the vocals.

As I said before, there are different aproaches to vocal mix in each track.

Kriptonite vocal, in Atmos, has a good sound bubble all around an above the listener. You are really fully surrounded by the vocals. I like very much that. I will try disabling Atmos in my AVR to hear how it sound in Quad.

Loser has frontal 'expanded' vocals. In my 9.1.4 I get the vocal just from central and wide speakers. I can imagine that in a 7.1.4/5.1.4 you will get the vocals from central and LR fronts, and in Quad just from the fronts like a good stereo.

I very welcome the creative vocal mixes. Other fantastic Atmos vocal mix I think about is Billie Eilish "Oxytocin" and others from the "Happier Than Ever" album. There are three Atmos albums from Billie Eilish in Tidal. You may not like her, but the sonics are fantastic.

I am listening to Glass Animals - Dreamland now and it is a great mix. The songs are starting to grow on me too. Their performance on one of the late night talk shows, Heat Waves, got me started. I have added the Billie Eilish to the queue. I liked her on SNL but I haven't gotten around to listening to her yet although I did add her SNL performances to my music video library.

Dammit. You're right about Katy Perry disguising herself as Adele. I knew that this might happen when I posted it. Still find it strange that there is no Adele representation.... Nor Kanye West for that matter, or Drake. (We have enough hip-hop anyway).

yes! 👍 its a superb mix! 😍
i couldn't believe how much more actively Surround-y it all was than the Winelight tracks i was playing just beforehand the other night, which tbh i found quite underwhelming and certainly not as scintillating as Mr. Scheiner's 5.1 at all.
Still reckon the Atmos mix of Winelight sounded pretty good to my ears. Maybe you need some more Wine...light.

haha.. if i have anymore Wine..light i'll be 99% proof! 🥴😂

i guess the Atmos is ok in its own right, i'm just finding it suffers by comparison with Scheiner's old 5.1, which i have done now, especially with regard to instrument placement.

he highlights things in specific spaces where everything has its place and yet despite the separation the mix still gels as a whole, whereas the Atmos is a wash of sounds all kinda hanging there, it doesn't engage me with the same impact and immediacy.

also the Atmos puts emphasis on and dials back on elements that i don't enjoy as much as what was done with the 5.1. there are new saxophone parts that aren't in the Stereo or the old 5.1 and right now they're jarring on me so i know why they were left out previously. also, to me the keyboard work on the album isn't as interesting as the percussion; the Atmos emphasises the keys, Scheiner emphasised the percussive elements more.

i haven't given up on the new mixes entirely, it just isn't doing it for me in the same way as the old Surround mixes right now but maybe given Wine, i mean time, who knows..! 🙂

I listened to this again last evening, and there wasn't so much in the rear heights as I thought. Seems much of what is in the RH are the same as in the surrounds. My RH are placed high on the side wall directly over my surrounds, so that fooled me.
The front heights have more discrete activity with some sax, percussion and backing vocals. Overall I still like the mix as I'm a Atmos junkie.

Hey folks, Happy Holidays to all. Excuse me for jumping in here without having read the whole thread, or other threads where Apple streaming surround music is discussed... but I got an Apple TV for Christmas and I'm enjoying the surround albums I've found, especially things I didn't want to spring for the deluxe box set for, like Let It Be and All Things Must Pass. It is frustrating though that Apple provides no easy way to list or search on all "spatial audio" albums. Wondering if anyone has started a list here, other than posts in a thread, containing all streaming surround albums. It's also a little confusing that there are true Atmos mixes, but also 5.1 mixes encoded as Atmos, along with 5.1 and quad mixes showing as Dolby Audio. I only have a 5.1 setup myself, but it seems like it would be a great public service to have an ongoing evolving list of all streaming surround albums, whether Atmos, 5.1 or quad. Is this already out there somewhere? If not, is there a level of interest in getting one going, perhaps a Google Spreadsheet that could have shared edit access?
