Quite a few brands put them out- I've seen models from Koss, Sansui, GE, Sony, and others. Each side literally had two separate drivers, so it was discrete. Problem is the front and rear are so close together the effect is lost.

They had a double headphone jack at the end, which would plug into a corresponding port on your quad receiver. You could unplug one side to hear the fronts or rears isolated.

BTW, how's the surround mix on Walls and Bridges ...... I can only IMAGINE!
Better than the Imagine quad, but still not terribly discrete. The 5.1 mixes of songs from that album on the Lennon Legend DVD compilation are superior.
