Multichannel Test Files (FLAC) with various channels/sample rates

The only surround system I ever had in a car (Van actually), I had a Panasonic Q8 player running from an inverter and 4 large bookshelf speakers in the back.
That was in early 70's.

By contrast both can play 8Ch LPCM files.

Yes LPCM audio placed within the .wav container. Personally I've not tried placing LPCM audio within Apples .aif/.aiff container
