Really bummed about Adrian Belew and Eric Avery both dropping out of the current lineup. Trent can make up for it with a surround release.

Hows about Trent getting us the long promised, oft delayed 'The Fragile' Deluxe Surround Version (which by all reports is pretty much in-the-bag) out before we worry about new surround NIN. Just my 2 cents worth. I REALLY WANT 'THE FRAGILE' IN 5.1!!!!!!!

Seeing as how I'm not a huge fan of NIN (yet...) I was very happy to find the DVD-A dualdisc of "With Teeth" yesterday for $4 used at a CD shop. Great bargain if you ask me! :)
(I also could've bought the dualdisc of Eric Clapton's "Back Home" too, but the cover was sticky and it was missing a guitar pick, so I said I'd hold off on that one, lol)

Well, no 5.1 it seems, but at least they will do this:

Nine Inch Nails:
Hesitation Marks was mastered in two different ways - the standard, “loud” mastering (which is what you’ll find on the CD, on iTunes, and everywhere else), and also an alternate “audiophile” mastering, which we’re offering as a free download option for anyone who purchases the album through http://store.nin.com/ . For the majority of people, the standard version will be preferable and differences will be difficult to detect. Audiophiles with high-end equipment and an understanding of the mastering process might prefer the alternate version.

For a detailed explanation with quotes from Alan Moulder and Tom Baker, read our blog post at http://nineinchnails.tumblr.com/post/59587808317/hesitation-marks-was-mastered-in-two-different

NOTE: The standard mastered version is in no way inferior to the Audiophile Version - we wouldn’t release something inferior as the default. And vinyl purists rest assured, the vinyl edition was mastered to sound the very best for that format. The Audiophile Version is merely an alternate take on the mastering, which some people will appreciate. It’s meant to give a slightly different experience, not denigrate the standard version. Listen to each and come to your own conclusions.

Too bad. I'm not interested in a brickwalled CD and won't pay for one just to get the privilege of downloading the "audiophile" version. And NIN vinyl is always notoriously overpriced. I would have bought a stereo BD, like he did with Ghosts. I'll just stick with the surround discs I already have and hope The Fragile is eventually released in 5.1. It's interesting that one of the hashtags at the bottom of the article is #loudnesswars. Instead of being praised for providing an audiophile option, I ask why are they catering to the lowest common denominator?

I preordered the download only option. Im sure it will sounbd great through the Surround Master and hope DR Rating is good.

I cant understand why they usse two difrferente masters either. I guess beacuas for some people Rock has to be loud and just dont know that they can tune the volume up, or if you have a playlist with modern recordings most will be loud and the volume drop to a more Dynamicly mastered song will be disliked...

but im happy someone in the industry thinks of audiophiles or at least to humans with those listening machines called ears

I didn't know there was a download only option. The article made it sound like you had to buy the CD to get it. I might take a look at this now.

Edit: the download by itself is the same price as the CD + download! On the other hand, the vinyl isn't that overpriced for NIN. Since it comes with the download, I may go that route.

i thought that too.. but I avoided shipping costs for the CD to Chile. and as the CD is "Loud" whats the point right?

I can tell you if I can get the audiophile version on release date...a week from now!

That makes sense living in Chili, nice option for you. I went ahead and pre-ordered the vinyl + download. I guess I should look at the bright side, rather than the negative.

OMG this really SUCKS!

Not the album... I liked it pretty much but:

Original Version: Dynamic Range Rating ->5
"Audiophle" Version: Dynamic Range Rating ->6

Oh how Audiophile this is... really!!! Audio phile with DR6???

I just saw the vinyl came in with a DR 11. I ordered the vinyl but it hasn't arrived yet. Why not use the vinyl mastering for the audiophile version?
