A SMPS uses a high-frequency, variable-duty-cycle square wave to drive its transformer. This is basically a recipe for a HF radiated-noise generator, especially compared to a traditional linear power supply, where the transformer is fed by a low-frequency sine wave.

With that said: The proof of the overall design is not at the power supply output, but at the audio output jacks - that's what we're ultimately listening to. To reiterate Milt's statement above, it is definitely more difficult to design a low-noise SMPS, but it's not impossible. There are many examples of truly excellent audio gear designs using this type of power supply these days. It's also worth remembering that the sine wave emerging from our electrical outlets, which directly feeds a conventional linear supply, contains significant distortion and noise to begin with.

I upgraded the power supply on my Oppo 105 to the OppoMod LPM SE($380).

I've wanted to do this for a couple of years. After getting good results with the Furutech/mundorf upgrade($135).

This LPM has taken my quad system to another level! More detail(crisp?), louder at a given volume setting. Soundstage seems a little bigger. Best result: The surround speakers really came to life.

I've upgraded Shunyata AC outlet, Transparent Audio speaker cables, TA RCA interconnects, Panamax power conditioner, had my Marantz 4300 recapped, bridged it's amps to 100W and added a 2270 for the rears, ALK networks in all 4 Belles, Crites tweeters up front, one--->dual SVS cylinder subs, Shunyata Venom power cords on Oppo and subs...

Although its impossible to guage each improvement in and of itself, I think this power supply upgrade is more significant than any of the above. And it's supposed to need a 100 hour break in. I now wonder what clock upgrades would yield?

If you have a stock Oppo, you gotta do this. It's one of those things where I feel like I need to relisten to every CD again.

I hope this info helps somebody and is posted in the correct section.
I just installed this Oppomod LPS in my 105D. There is a slight modification to the board pictured above (red 3 pin cable is not used). It makes a significant upgrade to clarity, soundstage (width and depth). Highly recommend. I have it plugged into a Puritan Audio PSM 156 with the City Ground. Power treatment really elevates the performance.
