Really sweet stand alone release. So nice that it isn't locked into a 3 digit box.
Ordered the BR immediately. I'll probably get the CD as well.
Even if the mix isn't that spectacular it's worth upgrading just for the improved picture.
I have the DVD of the original release somewhere.

I was in Italy in November so took a couple days and checked out the Pompeii ruins. They have quite a bit of PF memorabilia when you enter the amphitheater and have Echoes from the movie looping on a screen at the end of a long tunnel filled with PF tour posters, etc. At some point in the past they have done screenings of the movie in the amphitheater. The new release sounds like a good time for another screening at the amphitheater.

That makes me wonder if the Pyramids of Giza have Pink Floyd and Grateful Dead memorabilia in one of the pyramids. :)

Sounds great, but it's not like SW to have almost nothing in the heights? A little disappointed, hope the rest is better.

As excited as I am to have Wilson mixing the Floyd, I should probably temper my expectations a little bit on this one. If I recall correctly, I believe Pompei was recorded on 8-track. That doesn't give Steven a whole lot to work with. I am still optimistic that he will work some magic though.

Not that I am looking a gift horse in the mouth but I was hoping the next PF release was going to be a deluxe Meddle or Obscured By Clouds with a 5.1 & Atmos.
I thought The Wall would be next. Silly me.

Given that it was recorded on location on 8 tracks (well, 7 really, one track was devoted to a film sync pulse) and then transferred to 16 track for (mostly vocal) overdubs at Europa Sonore in Paris afterward, there isn't really a wealth of material that could go in the height speakers. Personally I think we're fortunate that the audio for these performances were captured as well as it was.

Speaking of the Europa Sonore overdubs, I guess the companion documentary that I worked on, Chit Chat with Oysters, isn't being included as part of this release, but I think it's essential viewing for anyone who loves the Pompeii film. You can stream it for free at the Cinematheque Francaise website:

I hate to be a party pooper but I don't really see anyone other than James Guthrie doing any new remixes for the 50th of WYWH.

Edit: I'd be surprised if we see a stereo remix as well since DSOTM never got one.
I'd be fine with that. But I would have said only Guthrie or Jackson would be doing this one too. But here we are with a Wilson mix. So, I have some hope.

The quadraphonic release was allegedly limited to New York and Los Angeles. The regular 4-track LCRS mix was pretty common for a while, but it looks like we're never going to get either it or the rare quad version on home video.
"All" we have to do is put the audio from Oxford Dickie's cleanup onto the new video. Assuming it all lines up and there are no gaps. But if would have been nice to have a clean copy from the quad master tapes.

Neither Guthrie nor Jackson have ever had anything to do with Pompeii audio previously as I understand it. Or did one of them do the DVD 5.1 mix?

God love this hobby, as a long time floyd maniac and SW lover this could mean amazing things ahead!
I'm a Queen fan but I've gravitated more to Floyd in recent years. This is at least in part due to getting a steady feed of Floyd surround remixes, which just isn't happening for Queen (indeed barely anything is happening other than constant Freddie based re-releases of existing mixes).

Well, they'll have to upgrade the file playing on that screen now! ;)
Something I'd love for SW to do (which I know would never happen) would be a more faithful surround remix of MLOR with all the original parts kept in.
Yeah, Steven has often been critical of post-Roger Floyd, so I'm doubtful that will happen.
