I was 11B as well, "acting jack" E5 after 13 months total service. IOW E4 pay and buck sergeant stripes. They never gave me the door gunner MOS designation.
The Captain was a first class chopper flyer. I was pretty good at map reading. We spent some time hauling the "spooks" around, dropping them off and picking them up.
Anyway long ago and far away.
Acting Jack is a temporary rank position but at the pay of your designated rank. It was usually done to maintain command structure. i.e. I was a squad leader, but moved positions.I’m a bit younger than you guys, was 1A but then 1H and never drafted. Consequently, all those designations and terms “acting jack” and “spooks“ are all Greek to me.
I did the Shake & Bake NCOC schooling down at Fort Benning GA in 69 and got the E4 Corporal rank while there, then to E5 post graduation. But unfortunately and maybe luckily I did something a bit dumb and got busted back down to E3 before I crossed the pond. Unfortunate because I lost the pay, luckily since I really had no interest in leading a grunt squad around the bush for a year.I was 11B as well, "acting jack" E5 after 13 months total service. I Did the same thing in High School. Our district has a special program that taught technical Electronics. I built my tube AM radio and also a crystal set. I still have my TI Sr10. That was the best in its day.As part of my lab work in Industrial Electronics, I had to build a tube radio. I believe it was more about developing soldering skills and making the shortest path from A > B.
There were some who never got it down or even made a functioning radio.
I still remember the calculator I used in the classroom sessions, though not the brand. Instead of the TI calculators I had one that used "reverse polish logic" with a crude red display. lol.
1978'ish I think, on the GI bill.
I don't think I ever had a crystal radio though I vaguely remember kits at Radio Shack I think.

I love those too! The Predictas light up, but due to internal component degradation over the years, you really want to unplug them asap. And the highlight to me is the Predicta TV's. Do they work?

Eddie KramerYes those TVs are cool.
I once saw a TV styled like that in a shop in Japan would have loved to take it home...... While they might work they wont receive an OTA signal without using a converter but Im sure there is no way to hook one up.
By the way whose signature is on the Cry of Love lp?
Sweet. This summer I may be building one, depending on when I get this hip surgery and recover. My Design. I had the rack, and the TV cabinet custom built.
