No, we were all describing it as such just for fun. :)

Of course it is. For reasons that are so well documented I refuse to explain.
Well, I did look for such documentation, and did not find any. Unless of course you are for some reason using your credit card on unsecured connections or websites, or on a public computer (which I hope no-one is doing). Nothing will happen to you if you buy something with your credit card on Amazon.

It's not a matter of using credit card on unsecured connection (by now I doubt any website does not use HTTPS for monetary transactions). The problem is where the credit card details end up. With what level of security they're treated. Sure one leaves CC details with Amazon, but we're talking about one of the most advanced companies on the web. In case of mishap you have a multitrillion dollars company as a fallback. Same thing for PayPal (minus the multitrillion).
Also, if you avoid widely disseminating credit card details on the web you reduce the surface attack.

Same thing for the multitude of personal details the website asks before being able to complete the transaction. Especially for digital downloads it doesn't make any sense for them to know my home address or phone number.

Is this really an issue?
I don’t know where it got leaked, but just before Christmas, some mucazoid got my CC number, so Chase closed the number and issued me a new credit card, which I got YESTERDAY. I was unable to use it for Christmas shopping and it put a pinch on my new turntable purchase.

So, yeah, it’s an issue.

Maybe 10 years back I purchased something on Amazon with my CC.
Shortly after I caught someone doing a fishing withdrawal for $1.00, twice over a period of
a week. When I called the CC they trashed the withdrawals but also insisted on trashing my CC
and sending out a new one. What a major PITA that can be. It was the last time I used a CC on Amazon
for a long long time.

You're not actually providing your CC details to IAA; you're providing them to Stripe, their payment processor, via an API. In the grand scheme of things, I don't know that PayPal is more secure than Stripe or Square or Shopify or whoever, although PayPal arguably has wider brand recognition.

That said: as much as I love and appreciate what IAA does (and at least one of the people who work there!), there are tons of things that continue to annoy me about their kludgy website and web store, starting with that requirement to provide a home address and phone number with each order. Not sure why that's necessary when, as you say, they're not actually shipping a physical product (and when Stripe should have all of the information needed to process one's order). An email address should suffice.

But this isn't really the place to rehearse all of those complaints. Better to send a polite message via the "Contact" page:

I'm not sure but that may be a security requirement of Stripe if you don't allow them to store your CC info ?

In any case, in IAA's favour I feel obliged to say that they handled my specific case of incompatibility of Madeleine Peyroux's Auro-3D release like true gentlemen. A real class act and, for that, I'll always try to support them.
Problems can always arise, it's how you solve them that matters.
