How should I set the volume knobs in the SM if I don't want to use it's attenuation? should I turn them to max or leave them at 0?
I'm thinking of connecting 2 preamps with remotes for front and rear speakers, so that I can balance the levels without standing up each time I wanna correct, could this possibly work? or is it too much interconnecting stuff?

The main level knob is best set as high clockwise as possible before you start seeing any evidence of the red clipping LED flashing. This maximises the dynamic range of the ADC. Then set all the output levels appropriately.
