As a young lad in the early 70's I'm familiar with their music due to it being played on Radio Luxemburg. But by the time I was old enough to go out and buy my own records they had broken-up and I forgot about them... Which is pretty sad because they're from my neck of the woods!

Well, having given this album another listen after a few years grace, have to say it really is underwhelming. Bits and pieces of boogie which many other did much better, when they do have a decent hook here and there, they do next to nothing to develop it, just milking it for a few minutes.....

The more I think about it the more genuinely baffled I am by this album having such a high reputation. There really is no accounting for taste. 😕

The nostalgia factor is strong for elderly people like me, who saw them live and / or in the Woodstock concert film.
They toured relentlessly in smaller cities as well as large, and built a loyal following, who kept trying to smuggle watermelons into auditoriums. 🍉

In 20 years we'll mostly be dead or past caring.

My ticket stub from when I saw them age 18:

Now, Cricklewood Green in surround, that would kick some ass.....a much more powerful set of songs, might you agree?

Also, it occurs to me that, a bit like Atomic Roosters In Hearing Of, the bands not so secret weapon, Alvin's lightning and loud guitar work, is dialled down in favour of lots more acoustic guiitar and keyboards. Strange.

I partially agree with you. A Space in Time contains thier biggest hit "I'd Love to Change the World" and the album came out after Woodstock, which helped to boost thier popularity. While I am so glad that it was released in Quad and I do think that the mix is excellent, I don't think that it is thier best material.

My favourite would have to be "Rock & Roll Music to the World" as well as much of thier pre Space in Time material.

Shots fired!
I think this new mastering delivery of the original quad mix is more deserving of that ridicule and the 7.1.4 remix is very lacking as well. This reissue deserved a lot better than this! I'm keeping my copy of the original Q4 tape someone made a digital copy of and shared on the internets some years ago.

This one is still a high point for me from these guys. It would sure be great to hear Shhhhh, Cricklewood, and Rock & Roll mixed in surround with the vibe of the Space and Time mix! In that order.

Some of their other albums are maybe not so strong. It feels like they focused on being a live band and studio albums might have been treated like an aside sometimes.

What's wrong with it?

Listening to it (the quad) now, perhaps the the high end is a bit harsh but cutting the treble a bit on playback fixes it. Didn't someone say that this release came from the previous DTS? Oops, I'm listening to my (corrected) DTS copy, pretty sure the Blu-ray sounded better. I'll pull it out and report back.

That is one that I don't have the Q4 digital copy of, so I'll have to take your word that it sounds better.
