Unboxing clip for the 6LP version of Sounds Of Summer-

From Best Classic Bands.com-
The collection boasts 24 new mixes including two first-time stereo mixes, plus 22 new-and-improved stereo mixes, which in some cases feature the latest in digital stereo extraction technology, allowing for the team to separate the original mono backing tracks for the first time.

The expanded edition of Sounds of Summer will be available in a variety of formats, including digitally, a 3-CD softpack, and as a Super Deluxe Edition 6-LP vinyl boxed set on 180-gram black vinyl in two options – a standard set or a numbered, limited edition version featuring a rainbow foil slipcase and four collectible lithographs. Both versions will feature color printed sleeves that replicate the original “Capitol Catalog” sleeves that highlight the entire Beach Boys discography, and all formats will include a booklet with new liner notes and updated photos. The original 30-track version will also be available in its newly remastered and upgraded form on single CD or double gatefold LP on standard weight vinyl or as a higher-end limited edition numbered version pressed on 180-gram vinyl with a tip-on jacket and a lithograph.

The press release mentioned an atmos version of CD-1 presumably for streaming only.

“Additionally, all 30 tracks on disc 1 of Sounds Of Summer have been mixed in immersive Dolby Atmos, joining the group’s Christmas Album which was mixed in spatial audio and released this past holiday season, and continuing the initiative to present the group’s catalog in the enveloping and exciting new audio format.”

NO PHYSICAL RELEASE OF DOLBY ATMOS! I’m sure most BB enthusiasts have copies of these tunes, but as a surround enthusiast, surely by now for a 60th Anniversary edition, they could release a physical copy of the Dolby Atmos! I have the Pet Sounds 50th Box Set with Blu-ray 5.1 which is sensational. Gather this will be streamed for Dolby enthusiasts! A physical copy for me PLEASE 🙏🤞🎶🎸😎

It's a very nice mix. I might pick this one up. But, I still like some of the fan-made mixes out there. Now, I don't know if it was intentional or not, but if you listen to the transition between the chorus and the second verse; the background singers get CUT OFF during the transition. Listen to :51-:52 "She's giving me the excitay......" as the lead vocals begin the second verse. There are some fan-made versions out there that.... I don't know if "restore" is the correct word to use here, but instead of being cut-off (probably a clunky tape edit), that backing vocal part completes the word "excitations" and softly fades out as the lead vocals start and go on. My rotten opinion is that's how the song *should* be. It's, for lack of a better term.... beautiful.

The version I keep around is labelled by being created by a Tom Wollaert. Out of all the mixes I've heard and collected.... his is the version I keep around.

I would love a physical copy of the ATMOS mix. Yet another lost opportunity.

The Beach Boys have got to be single-handedly bankrolling the decomposition algorithm industry... one of the papers in the field of "unmixing" or creating extraction mixes from early recordings was even titled "The Good Vibrations Problem".

No, that is they way it has always been. They don't finish the word until the end of the next chorus with a long "- tations....."

From the music industry's perspective, releasing this physically would be the lost opportunity, not the other way around. Each new streaming-only release drives more people to the perpetual revenue stream and, for multi-national multi-billion dollar enterprises, they're foregoing - in a relative sense - pennies. Just because we don't want it to be true, it doesn't mean it's not true.

Surround fans are at a crossroads. The ownership model is on life support with a DNR. You need to either accept the rental model/streaming as the future for surround (with non-surround soon to follow) or resign yourself to only listening to what you have now.

With regard to surround music, it seems to me the battle is no longer physical vs streaming. That's basically over. IMO the battle now is 1) the quality of surround streaming and 2) whether the industry will continue to support both real Atmos and headphone Atmos or whether it goes the headphones route only.

I'm holding out on streaming for the time being - there's always the Surround Master...

For the time being? That kind of sums up what I was saying about why they are moving to streaming only, no?

How long is a piece of string? I guess with streaming people won't have to worry about something becoming out of print.

How big is a byte? Streamers will always wake up wondering if the license has ended for their favorite album, or for some political reason the artist has pulled their catalogue from the streaming service. I will stick with the physical format, it is mine forever or I can sell it if I no longer want it.

Oh yes, they will. Try finding the first Sgt Pepper Atmos mix. But the reasons will be somewhat different.

So you've essentially made the decision to live with what you have? There's nothing wrong with that, but the music industry is betting - through carrots and sticks - you'll eventually change your mind.

I never did any streaming (although I'd largely done away with spinning physical discs years ago), but finally succumbed last fall when I saw where this was going.

No, of course not, I will be clearer now... I totally use streaming, even if it is compressed and doesn't sound as good as physical media. But, as you already know there are plenty of releases that are only available in Atmos via streaming services - specifically Tidal and Apple Music. However, I can not rely on these services to provide permanence - they could go out of business, or as I already mentioned the album or track could be removed for a variety of reasons. Without something physical in my possession, one can never be certain if their favorite song will be available for listening via streaming - several artists made that very apparent to fans who use Spotify recently. So, the music industry can bet all they want, but in actuality they don't even have full control of whether or not a song or album will be available via streaming - as the platform must still be in business and licensing still active as an example. And, btw, I can see it already fracturing like the video industry, segmenting with artists offering their catalogue or part of their material to only one service. This would mean I would have to subscribe to several music streaming services just to get it all, and that certainly is not happening for me. I don't think physical media is going to go away, the vinyl resurgence is a perfect example of consumer demand for the physical. In Tune, Wesley
