Please excuse me if this has already been gone over in detail. I'll read the entire thread in a bit.

But can anyone tell me if this DVD-A below is a quad mic that has active rear channels and not just ambience? And does the same go for all releases of DG material claiming that quad mixes are included?

And this appears to be a ADD spars coded disc. Which means the surround layer may not be vintage.

And this later one on BluRay? Is it one with active rear channels?

I want some more quad on disc like the recent Columbia quad mixes we've seen from Dutton on SACD where there is major action in rear changes. Will the PenaTone and DG reissues be disappointing to me in general?

I would like to thank the participants of this thread who pointed me to 1) Acoustic Sounds and 2) Berkshire Records Outlet.

Between the two of them I just received about 50 SACDs including a bunch of three channels from RCA Red Seal, Everest 35mm and Mercury Living Presence.

Thank you. This is a very wonderful forum.

Bearing in mind different ears will hear different things in different rooms with different setups, I'd say the Holst/Strauss DG release is decent when it comes to rear channel usage, nothing more, nothing less; in fact, I sent it back as it wasn't that decent. If you're a fan of Shostakovich 5 then this D-V quad release conducted by Ormandy is essential imo - it's the best, most dynamic multichannel classical release I've ever heard.

Oof. You returned it because you didn't think the mix was active enough? It's your right I guess but if that's more than an isolated thing we're not going to get more.

The Kleiber Beethoven is substantially a vintage quad mix with fake center and sub added. Not a big deal - the volume on them is very low. Either way, don't expect much beyond ambience in the rears. Also, note that the blu-ray version in the Kleiber complete orchestral recordings is converted from the SACD, for reasons I'm not clear on.

It's actually one of the very few things I've ever returned as per my consumer rights. I rarely buy stuff I'm not already sure about these days as I realised a couple of years ago that I've got way too much. Seeing as I already had a handful of copies of The Planets and this one was simply decent and nothing more, I felt I had to return it. Fwiw, the retailer was Amazon so it would have been no problem for them in the grand scheme of things.

I remember Derek's disappointment in that one, and I get it (especially as how I was the one who led him to expect more!). But as he pointed out, I think it's a case of YMMV. To my ears, the rears on that one are quite active, especially on The Planets (Zarathustra, less so), though perhaps not discrete on the order of the Shostakovich 5th, the Bartok Concerto for Orchestra, etc.

Yeah, not arguing rights, and I think I'm probably at the having too much and contemplating the same stage. But I'm pretty cautious and DG has seemed very tentative about what quad stuff they release. And yeah, not worried about hurting Amazon, but in the music biz returns are reported to the distributor, and I think it used to be a chargeback? Not worried about Universal Music either, but too many returns provoke a response.

Just sharing my overly cautious take, no judgment.

Both JUDGE and JURY, ubertrout and Windhoek [Derek] is GUILTY AS CHARGED!

But to get back to @quicksrt's original question: yes--if you have the patience to read back through the thread, I think you'll find answers to all of your questions. As for the DG reissues that Pentatone did: in terms of discrete mixes, they're uneven. I think @ubertrout would rightly recommend starting with the Boston Symphony Orchestra/Ozawa stuff. Bizet's Carmen conducted by Bernstein is also great, although DG have now reissued that one, themselves.

A couple I'm eyeing:

Also, if you do an "Advanced Search," you can search by file type, although the results aren't completely accurate.
Yes. You are right and there are some but, for me, nothing I have not already seen. The "Advanced Search" is not very useful for it since one cannot choose "MCH" but MCH with a specific sample rate and, even then, the results are inconsistent. Overall, quite frustrating.
