Great weekend of music! First the Jane's Addiction show mentioned above. As always, the sound at the Aragon sucked, but they still put on a great show. We got a good spot up close and to the side. As a bonus, Peter DiStefano came out for a song and they played ****o For Pyros' Cursed Female. I thought he might be the first of many guest stars considering all the talent that was in town, but that was it. Still very cool and a another great performance by JA.
Then on Sunday it was Day 3 of Lollapalooza. This was my first Lolla since they've been based in Chicago (my home town), but I've been to many of the previously traveling Lollas. Considering the setup with multiple stages and the space, I was surprised by how consistently great the sound was for each band.
We got there in time for the Sigur Ros set. This was the first time I'd seen them live. They sounded really good live, especially in a festival setting, which doesn't seem to be conducive to their style of music.
Next up was At the Drive-In, the main reason I traveled to Chicago, having gotten back together after a 10 year break. Despite some technical difficulties, they put out an explosive set! It was definitely worth going just to get the chance to see them live. I like The Mars Volta and Sparta, the two bands formed by the members after the breakup, but ATDI is so much better than either of them. I really hope they get back together permanently.
Then to finish off the night was Jack White. I was a huge White Stripes fan, but they seemed to be on the decline with their last two albums, so I wasn't too upset when they broke up. It seemed like it was the right time. Jack's other projects, the Raconteurs and Dead Weather, didn't do much for me. But his solo album this year ranks up there with anything the White Stripes have done and he just killed on stage Sunday night! I've seen the White Stripes live, and they were great, but Jack's two bands on Sunday (first half of the show was an all male band, second half was an all female band) added a lot of depth to the music. Jack played a lot of old WS songs throughout the night, as well as the Raconteurs "Steady As She Goes," in addition to the solo songs. It was all great! Where the WS were basically guitar and drums, the solo bands added bass, violin, keyboards, mandolin, and pedal steel guitar. An amazing show, the best performance of a spectacular weekend.
