While I was doing research for that Vanguard history post I just made, I was looking through Vanguard's VSQ QS LP series, and I noticed there are a ton of holes in the sequential numbering system, presumably for albums that were assigned a quad catalog number and then released only in stereo and not quad.

As we know, a lot of the Vanguard QS LP's have a common back cover that denotes both the stereo and quad catalog number, so I went through all the Vanguard VSD stereo releases from 1972 through 1975 and looked at the back covers, and found a bunch that have quad catalog numbers that were never released in quad, and also don't show up in the 'Quadraphonic Recordings NOT RELEASED' discography:

VSQ 40021 - The Country Gentlemen 'The Country Gentlemen' (1973)
VSQ-40023 - Larry Coryell 'The Real Great Escape' (1973)
VSQ-40027 - Buffy Sainte-Marie 'Native North-American Child: An Odyssey' (1974)
VSQ-40041 - The Roto Rooter Good Time Christmas Band 'The Roto Rooter Good Time Christmas Band' (1974)

There are also several more catalog prefixes that I can't find any information for, but were probably allocated to other Vanguard releases of the 1973/74 period:

VSQ 40010 - ?
VSQ 40014 - ?
VSQ 40019 - ?
VSQ-40029 - ?
VSQ-40030 - ?
VSQ-40037 - ?
VSQ-40038 - ?
VSQ-40044 - ?

@steelydave

That stereo album of Seigel Schwall - Best Of (1973) , unreleased SQ album ,comes with a stereo numbers listings on the album jacket .
However there is no way to discern how the quad numbers are assigned.

Sorry Steely.

The Vanguard quad LP's were in SQ, except for in Japan, where they were QS.

I remember when quad came out that some record companies use the same number for the stereo and quad issues and changed only the prefix for the difference between the stereo and the quad.

For the ones with no quad issue, there was only the one number.

They also did the same thing for the difference between the mono and stereo versions.

I have one album in both the stereo and mono version. The covers have the same number, except that an S was added to the prefix on the stereo version.

@steelydave

I was looking for some common thread or common indicator for those Vanguard releases.
Not very promising but the closest I came up with are the Stereo recordings that were picked for quad release seem to be anywhere between the numbers : VSD 79318.... to VSD 79350 .

I have a Vanguard Stereo listing from a record sleeve that gives the quad release available* and the relative stereo number .

Unfortunately it does not indicate all the quad albums released .

Going by the quad release numbers I have ;

These pictures (not the best) of the Stereo Vanguard Record sleeve are what I sat down with to try and find any similarlity between the quad records.
FWIW The quad numbers are not indicated... only an asteric * to signify they are available in quad but the correspondingly stereo numbers are provided.

fizzywigs41 (what does that mean anyway!)
About this release-
VSQ 400045 ............VSD 79350 ...OREGON , WINTER LIGHT *
I did something unusual recently; and even though certainly not definitive, it leaves me to believe there was never a Quad of this just a rear cover misprint.
I pulled up the listings on discogs and emailed every seller there that were currently selling that version and asked them if they had any copies with the VSQ 400045 number on the front or anywhere other than just the rear cover. And also if they’d ever seen it elsewhere from the past? There were dozens of sellers, and some of them large (probably record store) sellers. Many of them answered and all said they’d never seen that number anywhere other than the rear cover, and some even knew it was an Quad SQ designation. So🤷‍♂️ and had a🍺

Not all the quad albums were indicated on that (11-77) Vanguard Record Sleeve .
Those that were had (* also available in quad) indicated.
So that Oregon Album I was unsure of so that's why I stated "*may be available in quad" as iit's in amongst one or two actual Quad albums that were released .
