I've often thought what my collection of Q8's might bring on ebay. The curiosity is getting to me almost to the point where I want to list the lot with a ridiculous reserve and see what it brings. Some big lots have gone for pretty good money. I highly doubt I'd recoup what I've invested (easily a couple grand by now).

Here's the list. What do you guys think?
(There's 235 cartridges, all in VG to NM condition. All perfectly playable)

Currently, eBay has a promotion which permits 5 free auction style listings each month. Who cares what they are worth? Just list them with a starting price of the minimum you will accept and see if you get any bids. If you don't get any bids, you are not out a penny. A collection like that is basically one of the kind and I can't even offer a good guess as to total value.

Chris

In my experience, you would get more cash by selling them individually, however it's more of a pain. Especially shipping the things.

That's a nice block of stuff. Some are worth a lot, some aren't worth much at all. If you eBay'd those around 2001-2001, you would have really made a killing. These days, with the derth of converted quad out there, it's more hit and miss.

Good luck with whatever you try! Keep us posted.

Selling them individually at one of the forums certainly could ultimately realize a greater value but one at a time on eBay, not likely. With eBay, the $.40 plus 3% PayPal fee for each payment and eBay listing fees and final value fees make doing well very difficult. Buy it Now on eBay is 15% final value fee for media now. My method would cost $20 final value fee for the whole lot if it sells. I think my suggestion is the first thing to try, then if that doesn't work and he really wants to sell them there are other ways to proceed.

He has to use a specific listing form and here is the eBay announcement on the 5 free.

Effective today, pay no Insertion Fees on your first 5 qualifying Auction-style listings when you use the eBay Sell Your Item or Simple listing form. This is not a short-term promotion—it’s a change to eBay pricing. You can now list 5 items every 30 days and pay nothing unless your items sell.

The Final Value Fee for these first 5 listings with $0.00 Insertion Fees will be 8.75% of the sales price or $20, whichever is lower.

See the original May 12 announcement below for all options available for sellers.

Start selling!

Sincerely,
Dinesh Lathi
VP, Seller Experience

Of course this deal could end at some point in the not too distant future. I have seen people complain about this deal, but it is the only way I have listing anything for the last 5 months.

I've probably got too many to even think of selling now. I was mostly curious as to what the lot would be worth. I've often figured it with the average cost of each tape around $50, x235 = $11,750  That seems awfully high, but even valuing each tape at $25 each = $5,875! As it's been said some are quite rare, most aren't. Some hold quite a lot of value, some don't.

I guess I'm trying to justify the whole collection. I do that sometimes. Same with my cars.... I have FIVE classic cars. If I stopped playing with cars and stopped playing with Quad, then what would I do?

Sad thing is, I don't feel I'm done with either. I have too many automotive projects to finish and others I haven't even begun. Ditto with Quad.... I still have a short list of Q8's I'd like to own before I could feel like my collection was "complete".

You would probably have a lot more money in the bank. :smokin

I'd think you could end up grossing at least 5 large, but remember that the costs on ebay might be more than you expect--not sure how much experience you have with ebay, but I tried to sell some guitars a while back, I couldn't move anything and ended up with a big bill for uploading pictures, etc. Was a waste--I'll probly try it again some time:alienrob:

List it at $5,000 on eBay using the method described above, you know exactly what the eBay cost will be, $0.00 if it doesn't sell and $20 if it does regardless of price. The PayPal fees will be $.40 plus whatever percentage is charged now, I believe 2.9.

Chris

Don't they charge for picture uploading? did they change something or did I get screwed? This was like 5 or 6 years ago that this happened to me.

One picture is free and it can be a big one, whatever their file size limit is. $20 fee if it sells sure sounds reasonable to me, since it is risk free and costs nothing if it doesn't. There is also a chance whoever wins this would want to pay in person and pick it up in person, eliminating PayPal fees.

Chris

Please don't put them on Ebay. Donate them to my favorite charity: ME!!!

J/K

That's a pretty sweet collection you have there. If you were to sell them, make sure you back them all up to DVD-A or MC wav's before selling them :)
