Everyone has it...the one and only....

Mine is Steely Dan's Gaucho. Everytime I hear it I am deeply grateful that it exists.
It is such a warm and surrounding mix.
Everything is overwhelming.

But perhaps a new number one will come soon, oh soon the light....

Another one of these impossible to answer threads. I was just reviewing my surround spreadsheet and saw at least 5 titles that are always a marvel to listen to. But last night I was listening to The Raven That Refused to Sing. That mix is flawless. So I'll go with it.

There are just too many excellent mixes to pick "just one"! All the dan/fagen stuff-anything by ES, and then the new BD stuff-PF-Tull- PT-too much!

Porcupine Tree - Deadwing - This has always been my fave....

damn, you forced me, inspite of crappy weather, to dig in pile of discs but seems effort was worth to prove i was right :p

You are correct. My apologies for sending you into the cold. I was getting my information from the booklet the comes with the disc. But as you have revealed, the on-screen credits contain further details.

You keep your pile of discs out in the weather?

sure, i heard that discs have tendency to rot. since not room enough in the fridge and due to limited space
in my igloo as well, i decided to keep them outside.
:p

'Gaucho' is my favourite as well.

I play it every couple of weeks loud and all the way through.

It never ceases to impress.

I have the DVD-A and the SA-CD.

Surely not everybody can just choose one.
I decided myself for Gaucho because it was the one that changed everything.
After hearing this I began hunting for 5.1 discs!
:)

Truer words have never been spoken. I vote we kinda expand our "best ever" or "Number 1" thinking a little bit. Picking only "one" anything (except a wife)...Its kinda like totally impossible.... However I will say that:

Elton John - Captain Fantastic is pure discrete 5.1 heaven. Elton & his band really put out orchestral rock on that one and the discrete 5.1 reveals many beautiful instrument lines/layers that were buried prior in 2.0 purgatory.

ELP - ELP and then Tarkus are must have and share my Number 1 spot along with the 2002 5.1 DVD-Audio of ELP - Brain Salad Surgery along with PF - DSOTM & WYWH...

@IMachine: I simply can not listen to Gaucho, because when I do it immediately and quite painfully reminds me that their more musically deep offerings don't exist in 5.1.
Aja - Pretzel Logic - Royal Scam, etc... I would nuke small countries to have those in discrete 5.1!:phones

Can't go past Dark Side Of The Moon - Quad Mix

I also love Ten Years After - In Search Of Space Quad Mix
& Ziggy Stardust In 5.1

Yes, it is hard to beat the Ambra disc's for liquid, immersive surround. The German and Dutch engineers always seem to be at the cutting edge of audio technology.

LOL. That is very very funny. Thanks for that. Disc's vapourise here in North Australia like my Bonnie Raitt DVD-A. No player I own now recognises any of the streams. I can see clearly now :yikes through the disc when put up to light. The 1's and 0's must of melted away. Anybody got a spare copy they want to sell/trade?.

As so many here have stated, this question is really hard to answer. I'll go with the Ambra and Lichtmond discs.

Every time I pop one of these in, it blows me away how much surround magic is going on.

I need to give those Ambra's another chance.. I have the DVD-V (DTS) of Child Of The Universe and the DVD-A (Adv'd Res) of Honour/Glory but I just couldn't get into the music itself (or the production values, it all sounded homespun and cheap).. the mixes were engaging/active/discrete/immersive -- call 'em what you will.. but that was where it started & finished for me.. ho hum, I'll give them another spin and see if they "click" :)
