From Paramount Pictures and director Michael Mann COLLATERAL [Upscaled UHD4K/HDR10/Dolby Vision/DTS~HD MA 5.1/Steelbook Edition]

Watched this 2004 'classic 'from Michael Mann last night on FIOS and was literally moved to purchase this steelbook edition [on sale @Amazon for under $18] due to the brilliant, and I mean brilliant performances from its two leads .... Tom Cruise and Jamie Foxx who was nominated for a best supporting actor role.

Playing totally against type, I consider this one of Cruise's finest performances as a hit man who at gunpoint secures the services of LA cabbie Foxx to drive him around to knock off 5 witnesses who are poised to testify against a drug cartel in an upcoming criminal case.

But under Mann's laser focused direction, it's more than just a good guy bad guy drama as Cruise gets into Foxx's head and turns a once complacent 'dreamer' into a moral vigilante hell bent on just doing the right thing!

The cinematography is stunning, the music compelling and the co stars include Vincent D'Onofrio, Peter Berg, Jada Pinkett Smith and Bruce McGill with an early cameo by Jason Statham.

In this age of non stop action cinema with tired plot points and endless violence it was a pleasure to watch Mann's brilliant interplay between sociopath Cruise and unwilling abductee Foxx take on such measured layers and IMO, Cruise should've been up for a Best Actor's award ........as his portrayal as hit man Vincent with his salt and pepper hair, ultra cool demeanor and total absence of moral scruples was as compelling as any of those classic bad guys from the 40's and 50's. A 'Maverick' performance, INDEED!

Talk of a new Spinal Tap movie has me revisiting this DVD. I never watched it in 5.1 before! Not only is the film still hilarious, the surround track kicks aspect during the musical performances.

Tangerine Dream score for Sorcerer, bought on vinyl after seeing it on release.
Not a fan of the updated cover art for many of these.

Disappointigly, the "unforgettable, highly influential score by Philip Glass" for Mishima appears to be only stereo.

Monk is mono.

Glenn Gould gets 5.1.

Bear Whiz, oops, I mean The Wiz gets an Atmos treatment.

Great release schedule.

Fear not, Mishima's Philip Glass score on the old Criterion BD~V is listed as 2.0 Stereo SURROUND which means it's probably Dolby Surround encoded and should pan out to the sides and rears in Dolby Pro Logic II or equivalent!
