The 55 inch OLED is five grand. I could buy three of my 55 inch LG OLEDs for that amount. And my LG plays 3D.

I noticed, Seilerbird. And according to SONY, they've been involved with OLED for TEN YEARS. Has the technology even been around for that long? And if you noticed, the SONY OLED Bravias are in the exact same configurations as the LG sets: 55", 65" and 77". Wonder if they're being manufactured by LG for SONY?

It's going to be a 3D nite for me. Everything's frozen solid outside and I'm hunkered in for the evening.

But I do have a gift card and I'll probably spring for that SONY $300 player..........I'll be the first one on the block to review it.....which sometimes isn't a great idea [if there are any problems with early units].@:

Yes it has been around that long. I remember shopping for tvs back then. I noticed it as soon as I saw it. It had the best picture of any tv regardless. The only drawbacks were it was only available in 11 inch screen size and 2500 USD. We got a Pioneer 60" plasma Elite instead, to this day the finest plasma I have seen. That Organic Light Emitting Doide action though, aka OLED!

Thanks for 'refreshing' my memory. Forgot about those pricey 11" OLED sets. Now you can buy 55" OLED 3D sets for way under that $2500 price point. And yes, those Pioneer Elite Plasmas were incredible.

If you have ANY interest in 3D, would you ever consider a new 65" OLED LG set?

The one consolation is that with OLED technology being 10 years old, at least we know the technology is somewhat mature because with today's seemingly disposable technology, hopefully the new crop of OLEDs will last more than a couple of years. My Panasonic 3D Plasma lasted about six before it suddenly 'expired' and the 3D Quality was way too dark to fully enjoy the format. For that, OLED excels.....hands down!

I just ordered the SONY UBP~X800 4K UHD Player from Crutchfield with a 3 year protection plan. Total cost was $330 with free shipping and NO sales tax. Should be arriving by next Monday. Cannot wait. I've been stocking up on 4K movies for the past few months so at least I have something to watch.

Just ordered the 4K UHD of Arrival. Unfortunately, NO 3D and from the reviews at Bluray.com, the Paramount release is a very drab affair with the 4K actually exceeding the 2K BD~V quality. You might say 'duh' to my last statement, but a lot of the 4K UHDs have received less than stellar kudos lately with the reviewer actually preferring the 2K presentation. Hopefully that will change in time or perhaps the reviewers should upgrade to OLED for their assessments.

Tonight I watched the 3D BD~V of Passengers (also comes with a 4K/2D BD~V). I thought it was an extremely thought provoking film but the 3D while nothing spectacular did add extreme depth to the gigundus space ship which is on a hundred year journey to a new civilization with over 5000 'passengers' on board.

I finally also got to see the incredible Warner's restoration (from a 4K remaster) and restored stereo track (24 bit) of House of Wax [1953]. Again, bluray.com alleged that the source material was soft (it was after all shot on a minuscule $300K budget) but on the OLED it was ANYTHING BUT. Presented in 4 x 3, the colors are simply dazzling and the always inventive pop out effects are wonderful to behold. Besides the inimitable Vincent Price, the cast also includes a young Charles Bronson as a mute sculptor acting under a pseudonym. Wow, I didn't think there was a premium attached to buying the 'curved' model. I paid about $1799 for my LG 55" Curved OLED set. I love the curve but it's not by any means a mandatory option.

BTW, tonight I inserted my new SONY UBP X800 4K UHD player into my OLED set (replacing the 1080p OPPO BDP 95). I am one of those folks who do believe in break~in periods for ALL components and even HDMI cables. Initial impression: NOT sure. I put in the 4K of Ghostbusters and then the 1080p BD~V. I actually preferred the 3D 1080p.

Woody, good luck with the OLED set. I think you will be quite surprised at the extreme uptick in quality. Do you have a true UHD 4K player, yet?

This will be my first home experience of 3D too. To say I am a late adapter is probably an understatement!

Purchased but won't bring home until I can get access to my usual installer to give Ethernet access and move my existing plasma to our alfresco area.

If you want to laugh, I had a Panasonic Plasma 3D set for 6 years and about 40 3D movies and the image was SO dark on the Plasma (and it was THX certified) and those rechargeable goggles such a joke (they worked and then they didn't work and were VERY uncomfortable) that until I took possession of the LG OLED set, I never really got to fully appreciate the format.

My advice, since 3D WILL be a thing of the past, if you have any interest in buying 3D movies, do so ASAP or you'll be paying a king's ransom down the road when they're NO longer available. Some of them are as low as $4.99 from Amazon (way cheaper than a compact disc).

Another word of advice. Unless you have a NEW receiver set up for true UHD TV (I don't as it's in my bedroom....low priority for me), try the 2 output HDMI approach........Plug HDMI 1 directly into you OLED and the audio (HDMI 2) into your receiver. Some receivers that are UHD ready should pass the signal without any issues but I like that DIRECT CONNECTION approach to my TV. NON HD Receivers will not even pass 3D if plugged directly into OLDER receivers Just a suggestion.

Most UHP Players have 2 HDMI outputs (MOST but NOT all of the OPPOs do) and my new SONY UBP X800 also does.

TBH I was about to take the plunge on the curve, but it wasn't as heavily discounted, and 'd have to buy the showroom set. (Which was off putting)

Just spent an entire long days journey into night watching 3D TV via the new SONY 4K UHD UBP X800 player. I do think it has an edge over my OPPO BDP 95. The video is stunning. The remake of Point Break while much maligned is a fantastic 3D experience and is frankly better than most of the drivel Hollywood is dishing out today. Why everyone compares it to the original is anyone's guess. Taken on its own, I think one will be surprised how spiritual it really is. The scenery and stunts are truly extraordinary.

I thought you were talking about LG in which 3D is only available as a curved model. I did not compare them both. The curve is meaningless to me. The 3D is why I bought the set.

I like the curve, but it's not a terribly important feature. On the other hand my girlfriend is neutral about the OLED contrast capabilities, but she loves the curve. So therefore I'm a fan of it too

I didn't get a chance to hug the curve on the shopfloor as I was standing next to my wife/kids at the time. I would bet however it's not as enjoyable as my wife's curves- which also entered the frame of reference when making a decision. Still have time to correct my impulses if the collective voice indicates I will be missing out on some pretty major 3D experiences.

We are not harking back to the prior **** theate experiences I hope?![emoji43]

I had an urge to buy Doctor Strange on 3D blu ray today and guess what....it's as scarce as hen's teeth. Finally found one at Best Buy for $29.95 (Amazon wanted $80 new from third party sellers + s/h) and Deep Discount/Import CDs don't even list it. Best Buy also HAD a 3D steel book version of Doctor Strange but it's NO longer available.

A Word to the wise regarding 3D titles: Doubtful ANY of them will be repressed and I believe the time has come to stock up on existing titles while they're still relatively affordable because that old adage 'he who hesitates IS LOST' is ever more true!

Unfortunately, the list of upcoming 3D titles is dwindling, as well, as 4K seems to be 'the new kid on the block.' 3D may NOT be dead but it is on life support.:yikes

In the waning days of 3D TV, I'm now 'toying' with the idea of also adding a 65" LG OLED 3D TV to my arsenal (in addition to my 55" OLED bedroom TV) for my main system. As I've previously stated, I've always had projection TV in my main system and would have to give up the luxury of viewing it on a large screen but so far my search for adequate 3D projection TVs has been unsuccessful because once you've seen OLED even projectors have little wow factor in comparison [except for the significant uptick in SIZE].

Yes, 3D does expand the size of even 55" 3D TV's but let's be real, most viewing is done in 2D so that conundrum exists will I ultimately be satisfied with 65"? That LG 77" TV was oh so tempting but that ridiculous $20K price tag was a real turn off and they're not available anymore, anyway. Apparently they were manufactured in very limited supply and probably grace the bedroom [or bathroom:yikes] of some deep pocketed Dubai sultan ['just kidding'].

Decision, Decisions!
