Hi. steelydave
I was hoping you would steep in because you have more knowledge of CD-4 LP`s than I do....

He knows more about all this Quad stuff than.. just about anybody I've ever chatted to.. and that's saying something with you crazy lot I hang out with these days, the knowledge here is insane! ;)

Not to play spoiler, but all the RCA quad back covers are identical to their stereo counterparts - to me that's not definitive enough proof that these guys did the quad mixes.

Just personal opinion here, but in the interest of accuracy I think you need to adopt the methodology of erring on the side of caution and only crediting for quad remixes where they're explicitly stated as such. Sure, it's possible that all the RCA quads were mixed by the same guys that did the stereo mixes, but it's just as possible that RCA had some kind of quad remix room staffed by a bunch of uncredited junior engineers - the truth is we just don't know. The same goes with all the Ovation titles, and the uncredited WEA and Columbia quads - you have a 50% chance of being right if you guess, but for every wrong guess you add you're devaluing all of the legitimate accurate research we've done here.

Party pooper! :party :violin:nuke

Hi.

One more that I think will have a back cover credit (and that FredBlue WILL NOT BUY because it's a CD-4 record) but just leaving it here in case someone else has a copy:

Godspell - Official Soundtrack (Arista AQ-4001) (1976)

It's easy enough to find an image of the front cover online but the back is proving more elusive.

R-1922995-1328041181.jpeg.jpg

I do not have a copy to help, all I can find is the stereo versions back cover
1. is the reel to reel back cover
2. is the LP back cover
Which do have the same info...

What a funny coincidence - Richard Labonte on rhythm guitar! :D

I can't find anything Quad crediting Elvin Campbell at the minute.. but that is indicative of nothing!

Thank you Adam, that's truly a huge compliment.

I've learned so much about quad from the people who've frequented QQ over the last 10+ years, lots of which are still here and some of which have unfortunately left us, the least I can do is share what I know and not hoard knowledge as some kind of ego trip. Part of my hope with posting all this stuff has to do with how well Google (and other search engines) index everything. A lot of the stuff we've been talking about here (including various quad engineers, catalog numbers, studios and releases) if you search for them on Google, a QQ discussion comes up in the first page of results. Who knows what kind of serendpitious coincidence that might lead to in the future - someone involved with quad back in the day (or a relative), or someone outside of QQ with valuable information might stumble upon our little community research project as a result.

And I'm sorry for being a party pooper about the quad credits, the mixing genius who worked on the Floyd Cramer title below will have to remain in the mists of mystery and imagination for the time being!

Tom Pick, Leslie Ladd and Lord Brian Voldemort engineer of doom (1 x Quad):
Super Cunty **** - Floyd Cramer

BUSTED on the Floyd Cramer "funny".. ..I realise humour is subjective.. and does not always translate from country to country.. well, it made me giggle..
I am reminded, partly by the giggles and partly by the slip of the tongue of the time a friend of mine (high on dope) said (with a straight though clearly out of it face) "oh I love that new record by Cunty Toadstool".. I eventually deduced (after he slurringly sang some of the song) he actually meant K T Tunstall.. man that marijuana's quite something.. :smokin

Well, credit where credits due.. you know your stuff - and then some.. you're never one to toot your own horn (always better to get someone to do it for you I find) so in the words of Paul Williams "Let me be the one" to toot it for you! Toot toot! Beep beep! :p

You know, I sometimes get the impression some long term folks on these forums have probably been pretty weary (and wary) of old big mouth from jolly old england appearing seemingly out of nowhere and posting a gazillion times a second.. and I can imagine it could be rather tiresome for those that don't share such levels of effusiveness on the subject.. but I make no apologies for my enthusiasm for this hobby (it is still a hobby) which just grows and grows.. I think since I really started to "listen" to the old Columbia Quads (thank you Surround Master) rather than just dismiss them almost as antiquities while I was busy hoovering up obscure SACDs I've come to love and appreciate what QQ is about all the more.. and people like you Dave are a big part of my huge enjoyment of this place, which is really the only forum I visit every day now.. wow.. if you'd told me when I used to lurk here all those years ago before I signed up that I'd be absolutely hooked on surround music and hooked on QQ to the nth degree I would have laughed in your face (in your face!).. its a little bit funny, this feeling inside.

Yours,
Craptain Fagtastic

Take Time To Love Her, I Used All The Rohypnol On My Wife - Nat Stuckey
If Its Alright With You I'm Killing My Husband - Rosemary West

Over and out.. Goodnight! :phones

Thanks Adam, like most geniuses you're sadly under-appreciated in your own time. ;)

Going back through my old posts, I noticed you forgot to add these credits to the list:

Various Artists - The Great Hit Songs From Fiddler On The Roof and The New Love Themes (1972) - Quadraphonic engineer: Carson Taylor
Various Artists - Magnavox Presents A Sound Experience (1974) - Quadraphonic engineer: Carson Taylor

Vivaldi - Four Concertos Nos. 5,6,7 & 8 From Opus 8 ('Zukerman Plays And Conducts') (MQ 32693) - Quadraphonic remix engineering: Robert Gooch, Roy Emerson, Steve Taylor

Wagner - 'Organ Orgy' (Anthony Newman) (1975) (MQ 33268) - Quad remix: Arthur Kendy (You have this listed as ray moore w/arthur kendy, its just arthur kendy on his own)

and the updated version of my 'looking for back cover credits' list:

Popular:

Ray Conniff - The Happy Sound of Ray Conniff / The Great Hits of Yesterday (probably Bogert but would like to see a US back cover to verify)
Ray Conniff - Themes from S.W.A.T. and MASH & Others
Rick Derringer - Spring Fever
Percy Faith - In Concert [Japan]
Percy Faith - New Thing
Percy Faith - The Entertainer (probably Bogert like Chinatown but want to verify)
Godspell - Official Soundtrack (Arista AQ-4001) (1976)
Andre Kostelanetz - Plays Michael Legrand's Greatest Hits (CQ-32580)
Barry Manilow - This One's For You (AQ-4090) (1976)
Johnny Mathis - Love Story [Japan]
Mormon Tabernacle Choir - Stars And Stripes Forever
Charlie Rich - The Best Of
Sounds Of The 70's Orchestra - Quadraphonic Hit Sounds (QL-6968)(1975) (Probably Carson Taylor)

Classical:

W.A. MOZART: Concerto No. 1 in B flat for Violin & Orchestra K.207; Concerto No. 3 in G for Violin & Orchestra, K.216 (Zukerman, Barenboim, English Chamber Orchestra) MQ-32301

ARNOLD SCHOENBERG: Gurre-Lieder (Napier, Minton, Thomas, Nimsgern, Boulez/BBC Symphony Orchestra and Chorus) M2Q-33303 [2 LP]

JULES MASSENET: La Navarraise (Popp, Vanzo, Souzay, Almeida/London Symphony; Ambrosian Opera Chorus) MQ-33506

More interesting would have been the question for what project those titles were choosen to mix in quad in 1978.

A quad Läther?

-Kristian

Let's not forget that some of those RCA QuadrDiscs listed by BBQ were/are single inventory, so it w ould stand to reason the engineer that did quad likely did stereo/quad.

BTW Brian Christian is credited on my AF copy of Best Of The Guess Who.

Going back through my old posts, I noticed you forgot to add these credits to the list:

Sounds Of The 70's Orchestra - Quadraphonic Hit Sounds (QL-6968)(1975) (Probably Carson Taylor)

Yes, my album cover for that album states Carson Taylor as Quadrophonic Engineer.

Thanks Simon, any chance you could provide pictures or scans of that album (front/back/A&B-Side labels)? It seems to be exceedingly rare so it would be nice to have all of that preserved for posterity.

I'll be more than happy to do so but it won't be until next week I'm afraid. I'm moving in a few days and almost everything is in boxes. I won't forget though I assure you.

Yeah, that's a different one - they're all similarly (and confusingly) named - the first two were 'Sounds Of The Seventies' (1972) and then 'NEW Sounds Of The Seventies' (1973) followed by the one I'm looking for, 'Quadraphonic Hit Sounds' (from 1975). That's why I added the catalog number (QL-6968), because it's the easiest way to differentiate all these titles.

Even the stereo version of 'Quadraphonic Hit Sounds' which is called 'Instrumental Hit Sounds' (SL-6968) seems relatively rare (although there is one copy on eBay right now) so I think the quad version (QL-6968) is probably even harder to find and why I encouraged Simon to share pictures of his copy.

I was thinking about Carson Taylor today actually as a result of this, and wondering how many of the other Capitol quad releases he mixed. There are about 25 of them in total (including Grand Funk, Helen Reddy, Lettermen, Glen Campbell, Righteous Brothers etc.) but they were only released as Q8's and therefore lack any of the technical information that you'd normally find on an LP jacket. Unfortunately I think it's probably a mystery that's going to remain unsolved at this point.

info from CD-4'S "CD-4FORUM"

And this article I found interesting regarding four channel mixing-by Richard Perry.

He has produced quads by Streisand, Carly Simon, Harry Nilsson and Ringo Starr.

So apart from Streisand whose discs are clearly credited with the quad mixer, I would guess these:

RICHARD PERRY
Ringo Starr-Goodnight Vienna
Harry Nilsson-Nilsson Schmillsson
Carly Simon-No Secrets
Carly Simon-Hotcakes
